Question Military advice...

I am about to join the army, I am prior enlisted (marine corps) and am asking for alaska. Supposedly I get my choice of station because of prior enlisted, and I hear alaska is easier to get. I don't know alot about the units up there. I may have to go in as infantry, because I was Marine Recon before... Army considers it infantry (Marines consider it special ops). I have cold weather survival, SERE, and Airborne. I have lived around snow all my life, but never north of Ohio. I realize there are some major differences between the army and marines, ohio and alaska, and infantry units up there compared to say... Benning. Any advice you've got, I want!! I'd like to avoid deployment if possible, I've already done 2 deployments and my wife is 5 months pregnant.I may be able to switch MOS's but I dont know... if i do, any ideas? I have the score for any job, but I guess intel is a nice one... my parents were intel. *military brat*

I am going to buy a wrx when i get there, and my other car is a 2002 grand cherokee (v8 all wheel drive, with winter package, (and i realize i need the -60 antifreeze and block/battery heater) I have brand new good year silent armour (slightly oversized). I am a car guy from way (back but have never owned a wrx yet, but all my friends do in texas) or lived in that climate... I cant wait, but know i need advice, thanks in advance.

Im not military, nor do i ever want to be (f**#%$^ DRAFT B*&$^&%*) but you may get stuck up in fairbanks, elemndorf would be okay, i hear decent housing and the weather in anchorage is much nicer. Your risk i suppose.

Don't listen to the haters. Fairbanks is a great place to live, and there are a lot of subie guys up here. I also know a good salesman to get you a deal on a wrx when you get here.

I'm not hating by any means... but Anchorage > Fairbanks x eleventy billion.

I've been here 2 1/2 years... I can't wait to leave... it's just too cold here.. and too small of a town.

hmm... yeah, Air Force Cuts 40,000 jobs was the headline on the day I went into the recruiting office to join them... NO PRIOR SERVICE (they say) as of a month ago!! so army is next best.. I was on ship alot in marines and am never gonna be navy ! I really want fairbanks, but I'll be happy with anchorage. I can't see how I'd get elmendorf (or however you spell it) because it's an air force base right? is there army there? Like I said, if there is even one empty slot, army is giving dibs to prior enlisted. *me*(it may have to be some sort of infantry slot thou) I'll take what I can get, if it's in AK thou. I've been there a few times, but only for short times in Anchorage. I know a lot of people that have been stationed there, and anchorage, and have yet to hear a bad story.

Thats good there is an active suby presence up there... hopefully i'll get a decent deal on a car... i wont be coming until late Jan or early Feb thou. Know of any wrx's for sale under 15K?

I know Ft. Wainwright has the most popular Stryker Brigade. Thats about all I know about Alaska Army bases.

well.... from what i've seen, we get a lot of deployed army guys out of ft rich AND ft wainwright. however, if you go intel, you might stand a better chance of not getting sent out to the sandbox. ft rich is where you want to go, wainwright is hella cold... like -30 F in the winter time...

anchorage is the hotspot (not really) for things to do and places to go. if you can shoot for ft rich, that's your best option. i love alaska, but i hated fairbanks (sorry you fbx guys, but it sucked up there).

from what i gather, people who are already stationed out here are having a hard time getting an extension to stay on elmendorf/ft. rich...and having an even harder time to relocate here, period. being army and trying to get housing on elmedorf is hard if you don't have a family. they put my husband and i on the waiting list (which from what we were told was first come/first served) but couples w/ kids got priority...so i don't know how they'll process "prior enlisted"...we waited over a year until they told us that they had housing available on base, and by then, we said **** it. in my opinion, it's nicer living off-base, anyhow. i live in eagle river and it's real quiet. housing on ft. rich isn't as nice as housing on elmendorf from what i've seen. even officer housing isn't all that great. my friends who trained up in fbx said it sucked monkey nuts (harsh weather conditions and lack of social activities were the main concerns--like AKLGT pointed out in an earlier post.)

I guess that fairbanks does suck if you have no imagination and can't think of things to do on your own so you're forced to go to some sort of consumer resort and pay to be enertained. It is in fact -30 up here on occasion, but its a very dry cold because we aren't next to the ocean. So it doesn't feel nearly as cold as climates where it is very moist. I'm not trashing on anchorage at all (or on any of you anchorage folks) but I have to represent for FBX. I've lived here for 27 years, and I'll probably be here another 27.

Lownslow, where did you see this -60 (with out windchill)? Fairbanks hasn't had a cold winter since '99-2000. I love the cold weather I get paid more any time it's -25 or colder, that just means more mod money for the Suby.

if i were married theres no way i'd live on base, especially if i were expecting to stay up here a long time. i don't understand why people don't buy a house and get all that money back when they sell it

I know for a fact it has been in the -50s a few times since I've been here.....not sure if that is without windchill? Does it matter though? With windchill is out it's going to feel outside anyhow.
