Default Spied: BMW X6

Spy photographers have captured what appears to be the first prototype of the mysterious BMW X6 crossover. The X6 is believed to be a four-door crossover-coupe with a sloped roofline and sporty handling. BMW engineers have gone to great lengths to disguise the shape of the car's roof, but all indications are it will look something like the Volkswagen Concept A.

Spies say they were first unsure of the identity of this vehicle, since another X5 spin-off–the V5–is said to be in the works. But the V5 is supposed to be a uniquely space-efficient vehicle in the guise of Mercedes' R-Class, and this prototype doesn't seem to fit that description.

The X6 is likely still two years away from showrooms. Given its extensive component sharing with the new X5, that time-frame could be accelerated slightly. Gallery after the jump…

lol.. I wonder why they don't go to even greater lengths to hide what these vehicles actually look like, or who even makes them... Even through the camo, the thing reeks of BMW styling cues... maybe it is the grille we are seeing and the rims and the headlamps... or maybe they want close observers to have an idea?

Man thats the heaviest camo I've ever seen. Aside from the few details you can see from the front, the ENTIRE car has been distorted to all hell - can't really tell anything at all about it.

Kind of gives me a little hope for the Subaru spyshot car - .

I think the mesh grill really cheapens the BMW image. They should ditch it.

In fact, I'm writing to BMW right now. You see, I have a LOT of pull around the factory, so I'll bet you any amount of money that they lose the mesh grill when the car goes into production.

Mark my words.

Upon closer inspection, that thing is camo'd as all hell... but they did a good job of disguising the camo. The car is probably a lot smaller than it lets on, as you can see by the 2" recess in for the gas door. The hood, front fenders, and doors have been massively camo'd as well. I didn't notice at first.

Wow. It'll be even heavier than the current 6, which is already about 1000 lbs overweight. Just when I was sure all the automakers had come back to their senses.

Don't forget to tell them to ditch the rivet studs. It's mexi-ricey.

I love how they Camo the hell out of it but the front Grill gives it away or wheels or rear end.

They don't care that you know it is a BMW.

The Chinese, most likely. You don't want the Chery X6 to come out first, then BMW could get sued for copying their own car.

They are trying to hide the design of the car until the car is revealed. You also get people talking about the car on various message boards increasing the intrigue. The first real shots you see of the car shouldn't be test mules.

Hey, didn't you see the Slashdot article the other day? Chinese knockoffs not only outsell and hit the market ahead of the originals, they have better features customers actually want...

(Like I'm guessing a Chery would have switches instead of i-drive...)
