Post is front license plate required in WA?

What's the story with front license plates in WA?

I've been told that both front and rear are required, and that i stand the chance of getting regularly stopped by the police and fined if i don't have a plate. On the other hand, i see lots of people without front plates.

Yep...need one on front and rear. Those without one on the front are either out of state cars or are just buying time on getting stopped.

How about Oregon? I've heard the same kind of things. I even stopped some cops in a mall to ask and of course they're going to say yes you need both (so they can laser you). But what's the truth??? I should ask Bob... Lee's co-driver. He's a state policeman. Very cool guy too. I'll let you know.

That is why the DOT give you Lic. Tabs that specifically say "FRONT". Yes, you are breaking traffic laws by not having the front plate on (in WA). Then again, the worst you could probably get is a fix-it ticket... (tell them someone took your mounting screws, and you're on your way to the dealer to get new ones... they'll buy that).

Keep them on. Best not to give the cops ANY excuse for pulling you over. Work WITH the WASp - not against them. Works for me - I haven't received a traffic infraction for the past ... (double-digit) years! heh heh.

Yup! I worked for a car dealer and when we sold used cars with plates(news ones don't have plates yet)they had to have both front and back. And that went for washington plates too.
But as you have said, people drive without them all the time. If you want to risk being pulled over for something as dumb as having no front liscense plate then leave it off. Otherwise, I would recommend leaving it on when driving on public roads.

Heh. My buddy's wife doesn't run a plate on the front of her C5 Vette....

She gets the thumbs-up from WSP when they pass her. Nobody seems to care about the lack of a front plate on her car.

That said, Washington is not going to give you tabs for your front plate anymore. They plan on saving like $300,000 by just putting tabs on the back plate. That doesnt mean you won't have to run both plates though. Here's a link to the DOL site. http://www.wa.gov/dol/vehicles/tr-backtabs.htm
Interesting.

I always thought that if the state gave you two plates, you used two plates, UNLESS (now this is a big unless) your car doesnt have a place to safely mount a front plate. Which our cars do, unfortunatly. When I first bought my car, I pulled off the stupid bright green dealer ads where my plate should be, and ran around totaly stealth for two months.

Ahhhhhh, good times....

Heh, yeah, next time I get a new car I'm gonna run my temporary permit until it expires (which can be several months).

MY 1st vay back in WA State after 8 years I was driving a rental car. With in 2 hours I Got pulled over, "detained", and the cops even called my house. After it was all done..get this.. they give me this warning ticket for driving a car, a rental car that is, with no front plates.

In the court of law I'm innoccent untill proven guilty but in a cops mind...
I'm a covicted criminal that he/she is going get a pat on the back for bringing me in & making the arrest.
..what was that...no criminal record,no tickets..DAMN!, Your free to go sir. You have a nice day & hope those cuff weren't too tight there for ya, See ya next time, boy.

I just love cops.

oh BTW: yes, you do need front plates.

putting a plate up in the front window is not legal...
it's still considered improper display of a license plate... which carries a $71 fine...

i know at least 1 person who got cited for it too... lame ticket but... they will cite you...

we got a parking ticket last year on our Audi and they tacked on another fine ($14 ? I forget, it wasn't much) for not having a front plate. This was in Seattle... $71 seems incredible, I don't have a front plate on my car either.....

I have never seen a corvette with a front plate! It pisses me off because I doubt that everyone in a corvette gets tickets for it regularly. I guess that little plate over the front slot that says "Corvette" is good enough. I think I should get one of those and stick it on my front bumper! That way when I get pulled over I have an excuse.

"But officer, I can't take of my cool Corvette plate on the front bumper. God forbid I should deface the front of my car with a License plate!!!" That just shows how fair the system is.

BTW I have no intentions of removing my front plate, I'm just ranting.

Following are my feelings on the subject, you may not agree with them and you may not act the same way I do about it but oh well, deal with it.

[rant]Front plates suck, I wish Washington would follow suit with most of the other states and get rid of the front plate altogether. Personally, I choose not to run with one. I also don't put it in the window. A license plate sticks out like a sore thumb when it's in the window and makes it obvious to a cop driving by that you don't have a front plate. I keep mine in the glove box so if a cop pulls me over and makes me put it on, at least I have it. But to date I have never been pulled over for no license plate and I drive through Bellevue all the time (which is supposed to be really bad for that kind of thing). I even drove a lowered Honda around for 7 months with no front plate and never got pulled over (and we all know cops hate lowered Hondas). My view is this, I hate the way it looks and if what I have to do to not run a front plate is to deal with being pulled over occassionally and going to court, then so be it. It's an hour out of my day, I throw the plate on the front, drive down there, get it dismissed and then take it off again. That simple. Others may not agree with it, but so what, it's not their car and they're not the one going to court for it so just let me enjoy my car the way I want to.[/rant]

Thanks for letting me rant, and like I always say: before you get mad at what I said, just consider the source, ok?

BaruDreams - According the the DOL, you're supposed to surrender your temp permit when you get your new plates. Personally, I've never had the dealership install my plates (I know what a screwdriver looks like thank you very much!).

In actuality, and I hate to say it, but as long as your car looks new (not beater, not visually modified, clean), as long as you aren't (this is the part I hate) a minority, and as long as you don't do something stupid, you probably won't get pulled over for a license plate infraction.
