Default Thumping noise that goes faster with speed

I'm in Iraq and this happened to my mom back home while she was driving it. She's car-stupid and this is the explanation I got:
Quote:
I was driving on Sawmill road when it started to make a thumping noise that went faster as I went faster. So I parked the car - your father came out to look at it - we drove it to Byers Subaru - left a note since it was after nine. the guy called today and said the transmission specialist would not be in until tomorrow. Your father thought it was the transmission, but was not sure. They will take it for a test drive before they do any work. Do you remember when you were little and you would put a card in a bicycle spoke. The faster you rode your bike, the faster the clicking goes - this is the same as the car
She said it's coming from the front, any ideas before I get charged an arm? It's a 1992 all wheel drive SVX untouched except a tranny cooler.

sounds like maybe the wheel bearings. I also had a few loose lug nuts and right before the wheel fell off it made a sound like that.

wheel bearings of course, why didn't I think of that.. svx's are known to blow through those pretty often, but usually the rear ones. Any idea how much a shop will charge to replace them?

I'm not sure, I dont know exactly how much the bearing and seals cost, but figure on probably 2hrs labor plus roughly $150 for the parts.

A wheel bearing going is usually more of a vibration than a thump. I wouldn't completely strike it from the list of possibilities though.

Could this be a bad CV joint? When the axles in my '82 Benz went, it made one hell of a speed dependent clunking noise.

All the best in Iraq.

The dealers here charge about 400 per corner for the labor on wheel bearings. Not sure what they charge on parts. I didn't hear that part as I was laughing too hard.

Do check the CVs in addition to the wheel bearing. I test drove an SVX with either a dead WB or CV and it made some funky noises. That and the steering was a bit wonky. And the tranny was going out. And the interior was a mess. Doubt they ever sold the thing since they were asking about 8 times what a reasonable offer would have been.
