Think I broke my steering rack, please help:
OK, well it wasn't me, it was my friend, who asked me if I could ask you guys for help.
Here's a partial transcript from our AIM conversation:
FRIEND: I was changing the suspesion...... I'm such idiot..... be prepared to laugh
Scotty0305: uh oh
FRIEND: I accidenltly uncompressed the spring while it was on the strut
FRIEND: then I undid the bottom fork that attaches to the trailing arm that holds the strut on
FRIEND: I take the bolt off, and bam, the strut smacks the front axles and turns the wheels to the right
FRIEND: but the steering wheel didn't move......... =(
Scotty0305: man, that sucks
FRIEND: so I'm soooooo f***ed
Scotty0305: buy a subaru, hehe
FRIEND: The tie rod didn't seem to come loose
FRIEND: so if the tie rod didn't come loose,........ well
Scotty0305: can you drive it still?
Scotty0305: have you tried driving it?
FRIEND: Guess I'll drive it to the alignment shop
FRIEND: Have any idea what in the steering might have bent?
FRIEND: Wanna ask your subaru buddies? It applies to all cars
FRIEND: if the steerling wheeld doesn't move, but the wheels turn, and the tie rods didn't come loose, what bent?
Scotty0305: did it make any sounds?
FRIEND: I heard a crunch sound
FRIEND: So where should I head to?
FRIEND: Aligntment shop first?
Scotty0305: where do you live again?
FRIEND: I don't know any good mechanics =(
FRIEND: Yeah, I guess I know some guys there. The embarassment will hurt, though
Scotty0305: dealers are probably just gonna want to charge you lots of money
Scotty0305: it might be something simple
FRIEND: It gets a little more complex
Scotty0305: uh oh
FRIEND: I had an apoointment at the dealership to get my cv boot replaced (it was leaking) under warranty tommorow
FRIEND: the strut ripped it totally off.....
FRIEND: Good timing I guess, haha
FRIEND: since they ordered a new one already
Scotty0305: how long do you have left on the warranty?
FRIEND: it goes to 90,000 miles
FRIEND: less than 10k on the car
Anyone got any ideas on what's broken? It's a 2000 civic Si, if that makes any difference. No Honda jokes, please. He's a really smart guy, not your average ricer at all. I get the feeling that someday he too will be a Subaru fanatic like us.

ya didn't break anything.....you couldn't have...it' impossible...what you need to do now is somehow reompress that spring...OR you can break the lower ball joint loose and pull the strut assembly/fork off. how did you manage to take the strut top nut off?? well no matter you should be able to get it outta there...there is NO way you damaged the steering unless you were prying on the tie rod or rack w/ a 4 foot prybar.
