Question Brake Help? Anti-Rattle Clips Don't Work With New Pads.

I believe I've got a problem here.

I'm replacing the worn brakes on my Legacy and I've gone with some Satisfied OEM Brake pads that Tire Rack sells. They're the stock quality pads for the vehicle but upon closer inspection, the backing plate isn't exactly the same. Consequently, they aren't fitting with the rattle clips.

I can get them into place without the rattle clips, but I'm pretty sure that's going to guarantee rattles so I'm at a loss as to what I can do.

Has anyone dealt with this? What did you do?

Numerous times, on multiple cars, with the "Satisfied" brand pads and other brands. I presume the shape isn't way different, just a slight bit off?

Almost like the castings/ stampings on the plates are just too rough or not quite square?

Just Dremel, sand, or file a little bit off the plate tabs until they slide in. So long as you're not taking a huge amount of material off, it'll be fine.

They're almost exactly alike, but the tab is actually about 2-3mm narrower than the stock tab. The area that would need to be dremeled would probably have to go to a depth of 2-3mm as well.

As I see it, to get the anti rattle clip to work, you'd actually need something pushing up against the tab itself. Where the stock pad tab just fit.

It was also missing the notches for the shims, but the stock shims still fit okay. This just doesn't seem right.

The rear pads don't appear to be a problem though.

Eureka! And #$&@#^%!#!!!

It would seem I've been shipped the wrong part. Despite using their site I've been shipped some pads with the part number of PR929.

From Satisfied's website, I should have received PR721. Exactly how an automated system can make this mistake I don't know, but it will be really interesting to see how Tire Rack steps up to resolve this.

Mix-ups between the 929 and 721 are pretty common actually. 929 is the 03+ pad and was on some late 02s I think.

Well, this is one of those "the more you know" moments that's for sure. My Legacy's production year is 10/01, but it's classified as a MY02.

I can't say I've been terribly impressed with Tirerack's response to this problem. To their credit they're overnighting new pads, but charging me for the cost of ground freight. Plus, they may not even get them out until Monday. Which means I won't be able to finish my brakes until Tuesday evening.

In the end, these are pretty low dollar items, it's just that I've gone with a product that isn't readily available to me except from them. So my hands are tied based on their willingness to make this better. Live and learn I guess, but it sure can be frustrating at times.

I had to dremel my clips to make them fit on my Legacy. Everything works fine afterwards. I use Akebono pads and brembo rotors.
