Default 4x4 complains about his job... click here for details!

Sunday night it cost me $$ to go to work. Me and a bartender. Bartender leaves. Just me. I had a regular sitting at the bar. he was a little drunk, but always walks home. He asked to use his friends cell phone, and goes outside.
Never came back. The bartender who took off early took his moped to the guys house. When he answered the door he claimed he didn't remember being at our bar (15 minutes before) and said he'd be back to look at the bill. Can't pay it because he doesn't have any money. I ate a $75 tab. Bob lost his cell phone.

ouch.

unrelated: i met your doppleganger. no joke. he looks rather similar to you and works in a bar that sounds rather like the one you do. i am working on pictures (it's hard to be like "hey mr. male bartender... let me photographer you so i can post it on the internets").

in addition, he is surly.

Hmmm, that's too bad. Sorry to hear about that. Time for mafia-style threats/beat down?

And a $75 tab for one evening? What was he drinking?

75$ tab = 20$ cost, if that. bartenders have to eat retail for lost $$?

Yes.
He bought about a bottle of rumplemintz for himself and others, had food, and a steady influx of natural lights. Once it's on the tab, it has to be paid.
if I buy you a shot and it's on my tab, I ring it up at happy hour prices.

*cough* i "know" someone who had a $50 bar tab at dollar beer night recently. pre-tip. granted, it was "his" night to buy and three people drank, but it wasn't even going out big... just a normal night. $75 bar tabs are not uncommon. a round or two of shots could easily amount tothat.

The bartender has to swallow the tab? What's that crap? Maybe I'm just foreign but that's sounds like the shaft to me.

it's normal procedure, same thing happens if someone skips out on the bill in a restuarant....your server is stuck with the check

That sucks, why doesn't the restaurant/bar handle it? Is it the server/bartender's responsibility to keep the customer from skipping out?

if the lazy-ass bartender cant keep track of patrons at the bar, then yes. If it was food or beer, I wouldnt make him pay, but a whole bottle of liquor? Hells yes.

If you had been stealing from the bar every night for the last year like you should have, then this $75 is only a small amount in the red against the grand total.

Dummy.

He won't be a regular any more.

I don't see a big problem here.

I'm forced to agree.

Around about the time this guy's bill crested $30, someone should have asked to see some plastic or cash.

Wow....you guys.

I used to run a $80-$90 tab at least once a week at the same place....I'd come and go all night and no one ever said 'boo'. I did leave one night without paying (really drunken night) and came back a couple of days later, no problem.

Some bars make the servers eat the tab that night, this bar would let you hold a tab for weeks if needed.

If this were some schmo off the street I could see that maybe it wasn't the smartest thing to do, but a regular like he says this guy was wouldn't of raised any eyebrows as far as I was concerned.
