Default 1997 legcay L, question about interior lighting...

...In the picture below, are the little icons on the buttons supposed to light up? I've owned the car for a while, bought it used...and they've never lit up. I'm wondering if it's a blown fuse, a different problem...or if they just don't function this way? The little lights below the buttons light up...and the green part of the A/C button lights up...but none of the numbers around the fan speed dial or anything else lights up....?

follow these directions
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91
the only tedious part is messing w/ the E-clips on the temperature cable. Everything else is pretty straight forward. I used the bulbs from radioshack
listed as Radio Shack bulb #7219, catalog number 272-1092.
You can get the light w/ the base from the dealer probably but just taking the old one out and putting the radioshack one in takes a minute. theres also a light behind the hazard button incase yours doesnt light up either. thats easy to take care of just take the button out and peel off the silver wrapping and you will see the bulb.

Good Luck!

Okay, as usual I am still a little confused here...

On my '99 Legacy all the buttons light up as well as the green lights below (indicating which button you have pressed - the "defrost" is amber coloured), but on my '96 Legacy L all I get are the lights below the buttons. I just sort of assumed that is how the cheaper Legacys work. I have never seen the numbers on the fan speed control lighting up on either car.

What exactly does putting new bulbs in "fix" ???
Is there a reason why some bulbs burn out and others do not ???

Do I really need to yank those "E-clips" to disconnect the Heater control cable, or can I just swap out the bulbs with the cable mechanism still connected ??? I don't really want to loose my heat in the middle of winter.

Thanks !

Now, the write up you posted lists two different types of bulbs, a short and a long one. Did you just use the bulb you listed above in all three places?

Did you buy this car new? or used? If used...maybe the bulbs had burnt out before you bought it?

For as little trouble as it it, I'm going to give it a shot today...if it works, great...if it doesn't, then I'll be in the same position I have been for the past 3 years with this car. no big deal.

"easy" way around the E-clip situation is to unhook the cable from under the dash, near the passengers foot well. you have to get into a somewhat awkward position to do it, but it eliminates the need to remove the cable from the temp controls.

the bulbs are the same its just the base that they are in one of them is longer so just remember which hole the longer base went into and you will be good. As far as the 96 L that you said none of the fan numbers worked nor did the option butttons, those are the exact ones that were out on mine when i changed the bulbs. The only lights that worked on mine were the lights under the option buttons like yours and the green AC light. Once i changed the bulbs everything lights up. Its probably either the bulbs or just the bulb connection is slightly loose but you might as well change the bulbs while you have it in peices. As far as the temp cable goes, either take out the E-clips or do as skunk says cause its a hell of a lot easier to do this on a workbench or something rather that attempting to do it still connected which im not even sure would be possible with the space given. But also if your hazard light is out you might as well take a look at that as well.

Yes, on all models, all the buttons and lights are supposed to light up.

wow, I didn't know that I've had my 95 for 5 years now and everytime I drive it at night I swear at how stupid that is designed. I'll check into this, great write ups.

My bulbs were also blown when I first bought the car. I ended up replacing them good as new now.

Mine were out too, but I never replaced the bulbs. More often than not, it's a bad connection that caused your bulb to go out. Why? Rattling from driving, pushing those buttons, etc. Give it a wiggle, see if it doesn't light up again.

I'm thinking a spilled coffee is the culprit of my lights being blown. I took it apart, and there's a very very old brown sticky substance everywhere, this could be why my CD player is acting up as well.
