Default question about gearbox

So there I was. The street was empty, it was about 2 AM. I was on a fairly large 2 lane highway, with stop lights. I slowly coast towards a red stop light, my oontzy music blasting on the stereo. In the distance, I noticed a sign, "caution: school zone."

Out of no where, a brand new VW GTi pulled up next to me at the light. I look over at the driver and he gives me a look like he wants to race. He rev's his 2 liter FSI turbo engine, emitting a howl from the back. I recall countless magazines in my head. Thinking furiously, I recall RoadAndTrack's 0-60 time for the GTi (6.3 seconds) and then compare it to Cobb's typical Stage 2 WRX times. Alas, I can't recall my own car's benchmark time, but I believe it is under 5 seconds, so a race we shall have.

I move my mirror to make sure everything is in order. I pop the collar on my outer pink Ferrari/Puma shirt, adjust my trendy white trucker hat to the side, and look over again and give my engine a rev. The EJ20 groans, giving a coarse roar from my Prodrive Oval tip catback. The entire car shakes a little under the sheer power and authority of my 2 liter engine. My uncatted downpipe spews pollutants into the air. Inside the cabin, I grab my STi titanium shift knob, and ready first gear.

Suddenly, my cabin is flooded with chartreuse. I rev up to 3,000RPM and slowly release the clutch. Beside me, the VW GTi has trouble putting down it's nearly 200 ft/lbs of torque to the front wheels. My Pirelli Nero P-zero M+S mounted on my winter 16inch stock rims ravenously grip the tarmac, sending me off. The EJ20's tonality changes from muscle car low to F1 high as it reaches 7000 revolutions per minute. I shift my car into second, but instead of the blistering acceleration of 1st, my car slowly builds speed. Quickly, the autobahn ready hatch is ahead. I slow down in my car as the amber hazard lights engulf my cabin. I am defeated.

A street racer never quits.

/sarcasm off

Okay, I've noticed under hard acceleration, my 2nd gear seems, well, less lively. I don't street race and I've thus far only attended 3 autocrosses (and hope to attend more in the future!). But, what I'm trying to say is, I really don't drive my car hard normally. I shift below 2500RPM almost daily (blah blah, i bought the wrong car, blah blah, shift at 7k, its blah blah, you aren't even in boost, blah blah you're saving money on fuel, but you should buy a honda instead).

So anyway, the problem seems close to slipping gears, but its not quite as bad. Everything feels like its engaged, it just feels... slower. Weirdly enough, downshifts aren't a problem, just the upshift to second. Besides actually looking at the gearbox (which i assume is kind of hardwork, but I don't actually know), is there a way to see if gears are stripped or does anyone have a weird issue with second gear. My car is an 03 WRX with 43k miles, but it was bought used 3 years ago.

It's called winter gas + you needed to reset your ECU. Reset it, drive like a street racer for awhile and report back. Winter gas is reformulated with some scientific magic that makes cars run crappier. There's a reason for this, but it escapes me and I don't feel like going to Shell's website and viewing their FAQ about it.

ah, and as always, unabomber comes through. I had completely forgotten about winter fuel! Thanks for the tip. I'm just happy to hear of a factor that isn't gear slippage. I've been nice to the gearbox!
