Default Point of Catback exhaust

Hey,
I was wondering why people are spending the extra $150-$200 for an intermediate pipe. From what it sounds, there is next to no performance increase. Therefore, for someone who isn't planning on getting a turboback, would it be more worthwhile to just get the muffler for the sound, and then maybe an uppipe, since those are supposed to actually help the car a bit?

Let me know.
Thanks.

In addition to the up-pipe and muffler, you also might want to consider a downpipe, as that is supposed to make a big difference as well.

I still haven't changed my exhaust system, but from what I've read here and what I've seen under the car, it looks like the mid pipe is split into 2 sections; the front half holding the cat, the back half holding the resonator(?). When you replace the last half of the mid pipe (that seems to be standard for catback systems) you are eliminating the resonator. Since the job of the resonator is to quiet the engine, I figure it probably is a little restrictive. Technically you may be making a difference in power, but it would be a very subtle change that you wouldn't feel.

Hopefully this is somewhat helpful

Even though the downpipe gets you more hp, you don't want to restrict the exhaust flow by leaving the stock intermediate pipe. If you are going for more hp you will want better flow, and the complete exhaust will give you a better sound anyways. There might be fitting issues with getting a complete system too.

If you get a Scoobysport (or I assume any other 2.5" system) you won't have any problems running the stock midpipe, since it's designed to fit onto the stock parts. You can read about it at www.rallyperformance.com

On the WRX, there is a resonator hanging off the side of the Mid-pipe. Anything that affects the flow of the exhaust gases has the potential to reduce the flow.
