Default ICE RACING @ Big Lake!!!!!

ICE RACING SEASON IS ON!!!!
Ice Racing, sponsored by the Alaska Sports Car Club, will be held in early 2007, on the following dates: 1/7, 1/28, 2/10, 2/24, 3/18, and 3/31. This is 2 Sundays in Jan, 2 Saturdays in Feb, and a Sunday/Saturday for March. We will be using the Southport Marina site at the west side of Big Lake, same as last year. We are utilizing the same track that is being used by the local snowmachine racing group. Co-chairman Jim Sloan and I will be checking the track before the first event to see if it is ok for length and turn radius in the next couple weeks. You are welcome to help us.

So, if you have to get your race fix for the winter, this is the place to do it. The Rubber-to-Ice class is entry level, requiring only a good car with sticky winter tread, no studs, and your Snell 2000 helmet. You are racing wheel-to-wheel with others and metal-to-metal contact is not recommended. You don't need a roll cage or fuel cell, or race clothing to run this class. Interested, but not quite sure? Come on out and work a corner with us and check out the action and the cars.

Contact me if you have any questions at 243-4625 or Jim Sloan at 248-0851.
You can also access the Alaska Sports Car Club website at:

That sounds like fun but does everyone go around the track at once? Sounds like my paint is crying already

I hear my car's fenders crying but sounds like a lot of fun. I'll come out and at least work a corner.

We should make the 1/7 a Suby meet, or 1/28 since AKLGT/Mavrik are hosting a meet close to 1/7. Either way I'll come check it out, to bad I dont have a beater to run around the track with.

Sounds like fun, but also a good risk of contact. I'd like to check it out though.

With other cars next to you that are sliding. If you're really fast or real slow you might be ok.

Default Ice Racing at Big Lake

Yes, folks, you are racing with others on the track together. This is wheel-to-wheel racing. I said that, right? It is not autocross or rallycross. Your grip and speeds into corners are greatly reduced with rubber-to-ice only tires--remember I said no studs in this class. Once you get the hang of it you can start running in the studded classes--i.e. more grip, more speed.

So to avoid contact you gotta be heads up and don't drive like a nutcase. If you have contact with another racer then you have damage--not good--your problem. In racing, you fix your own damage--don't expect someone else to do it for you--that's the way it is. To avoid contact, concentrate on your line, your speed, the apex of the corner, and be aware at all times where the other cars are located.

I'm trying to get the most for my Vibe when I trade it in and having accidents won't help but I'm all in for corner working. I love watching wrecks.

awww. i see. ok, ya, guess we'll help out with the corners and see what it's like first. we don't have a beater car to use so... guess we will have to wait and see.

I tried "rubber to ice" class once a few years ago with my WRX and RE92s. I stayed in the back since I did not want to risk contact when passing even though I had a clear power advantage. RE92s did not grip when when braking from high speed or when cornering, remember this is ice. Just did not want to chance it. I did spin though. Fun.

your insurance will cover you if you wreck in the street... but not racing on a lake.
