Default Is this cold start normal? 97 gt

Just changed my oil and thought it was that because i was running 10w30 and now 5w30(little thicker for winter). anyways, when i start my car early in the morning to go to school, it would struggle to start and blog like at 250-500 rpm. Takes a good minue to go to normal 1500 rpm idle. Just curious if it's just me or do i need something new or replacing. LMK guys.

First, you don't want thicker oil for winter, you want thinner oil.

Second, 1500rpm is not a normal idle.

And third, no, what you're describing is not normal. I can't say the thicker oil is to blame for the starting problems, but it certainly isn't helping.

On very cold starts, both my Legacy's would idle near that mark for a short time right after the engine fires. Also, on starts were the temp was -15* or below, my 2.2l would idle very low and rough for about 5 seconds (first start of the day) before going to normal RPM. Once the car was warm, or had been ran that day, it would not do that again.

If yours is acting like this and is idling that low for a full minute, you may want to have it checked...

Same here. Mine will run at 1500 for probably a minute then go down to normal idle.

Mine 1st starts up to 2k and drops down to 1500 and when i give it a little bit of gas, it idles at 700 or 800.

OK, I was being too literal. A 1500rpm is not a "normal" idle, but it does appear to be the "cold idle" that these cars use initially in cold conditions.

You're absolutely right, but I think he meant thinner considering he went down to 5w-30.

I run 5w-30 all year round...honestly 10w-30 doesn't get into the system quick enough even in hot temps for my liking. And the final weight is the same, so there's really no incentive there.

Anyways, it should not idle that low ever, so I would see if the IAC valve is sticking in the cold or something. If it does that, give it a little rev (don't go overboard, revving higher than 4k can be really bad on a cold engine) action and see if the idle smooths out.

I'm surprised it didn't die when it dipped below 500 rpms.

I believe most of our cars have a warm up idle in our ECU when they first start so they will idle a little high tell warmed up a little.

Just to clear something up real quick like:

5w30 is thinner then 10w30. Instead of going with thicker you actually went to a thinner oil. 5w30 is great for any climate that sees sub freezing temp for any part of the year. I run 5w30 year round in my 2.2 impreza.

You definitely don't want anything thicker then 10w30 in our 2.2s. I tried running some 20w50 in order to clear up rod knock from worn bearings and the car really did not want to run.

Since switching to 5w30 I haven't had a single problem with start and idle. We've had some 20 degree mornings in this area already.

Its really strange and curious that this started occuring right after an oil change. Are you sure you didn't start the car a quart or more low?

the oil i put in was roughly 4.2 quarts. this occurance didn't happen after the oil change, it happened before and that's why i changed oil. hopefully this helps, or even better, a video of what i mean.

have you changed your fuel filter and plugs lately?
maybe its time to just do a tune up...

and 5w 30 is a lighter oil weight... so your ok on that end...

but vaccum hoses are a good place start if it keeps running rough... but most times, it never levels off if its a loose hose.
