Default Can you swap a 2.0 for a 2.5 in a 02?

I just recently had a run in with a guardrail. I beleive the guardrail got the better of me. Anyway, the belt slipped somewhat off the timing gear, does that mean the engine is now screwed?(I don't think I was in neutral when I clipped it). And if so, could I swap the EJ20 with an EJ25 for under $6k or $7k? I want to just see if it will start after the new radiator is dropped into it, and when it is, will I then be able to tell if the internals are FUBARed?

I don't know if your engine is messed up but yes you can swap a 2.5 into an 02. Cost will depend on how much you do (shortblock/longblock/or any upgraded internals) and how much of that you do yourself.

If you buy used you can definatly swap a 2.5 longblock in your car for that money or less. Might depend on what garage you go to as well... stay from Maco, Midas, Car-X etc.

A stock 2.5 shortblock should run you about 1600 new. I would opt to spend the extra 400 or so and get an Axis block with swaintech coated pistons if you're going to bother going that route. I'd also try and source some used STi heads, either USDM, or v7/v8 JDM (Approx. 1500-2000, depending on availability and market). Engine assembly will probably be around 500-600 in labor, unless you do it yourself.

Search the boards for reputable Subaru engine builders, and pick one closest to you if you decide to swap the motor.

Default Thanx

Thank you for the input. Unfortunetly I live in Kansas City, so when it comes to parts, the availability of parts is limited, VERY limited. The only Impreza I found at a salvage yard was end-over-ended! Now that dude had a bad day. I beleive the seatbelts were the only part still intact, and who the **** wants seat belts, well, a 5-point harness might be nice now that I think about it. It's not the parts that are hard tto locate via internet, it's the shipping that rapes my wallet. I imagine the ECU will have to be retuned to the long(?) or short(?) block swap? Basically, for a newb with some free time and a new passion,(having Michelle running and smoke'n EVOs') can you you recommend a sight to start familiarizing my half-way intelligent ass on subaru engines/tuning? Thanx again for the reply.

Well, you're at a good site to learn about Subaru engines and tuning. You'll find that your searching skills will improve greatly as you weed through 99% of the useless posts in search of those that contain useful information.

Longblock includes heads.

P.S. - 3 posts back to back is a good way to display your noob status.

Ha! Yeah, I thought you could individually respond to each thread, my bad. Thanks though. I am a noob and internet inept. I debateing whether to part my subaru out and get something else. I could send you some picks and you could maybe help me decide if you want? I must admit, I was havig some fun sliding around this corner and with another instance where I lost control and pulled out of the spin at the 540 degree mark, I mean i literally pulled out backwards and narrowly missed the gaurdrail,(what a ****ing rush!! 1 and a 1/2 spins), I thought I could recreate it,(the 540 miricale that is), I hit a patch of gravel and spun all the way around and the rest is history. Well, I hope not history. Again, I would be more than happy to send you a few picks of the vehicle, take a look, tell me how much of a dumbass I am, and then maybe discuss the next course of actions. I would be eternally gratefull.

Well, if he doesn't file an insurance claim and he fixes it all himself, it shouldn't affect anyone's insurance, just his pocketbook.

Good luck on the fix, and yeah, that was probably a kind of dumb thing to do. If there was a guardrail there, it probably means there was a slope off the road. It could have gone much worse for you.

Well, I see how your could be pissed, I would be too. I am not having insurance pay for the repair, it is all mine to finance. Which will make it all the much sweeter when I have it repaired, if I do.... I have some( alittle) mechanical skills, I was tightening down the cam gear on my 95 eclipse when I sold it to my boss to make the sales tax on the WRX. I milked the Eclipse for 180k miles, clutch and all! That's why I don't want to give up on Michelle(WRX). That's not to say I haven't rose your insurance rates with my previous racing inspired/total asinine vehicular flubbs. Sorry. I will do my best not to make any more insurance hikes for you, Seriously, mainly for my physical health but I will consider the bigger picture. Anyway, I am immobile right now, and that probably is a good thing in my present state of mind, or should I say lack of one, which I am currently trying to find a new, unfamiliar, healthy one). I am rambling, my apoligizes. thank you for responding.
