Default Abnormally low idle on a 1995 Legacy

My 1995 Legacy suddenly started dropping its idle speed to 500 RPM or less on the tach -- it usually idles at 700-750 RPM. The car will now occasionally stall when it drops to ultra-low idle. It does not do it from a cold start or after the car has been driven for 15 minutes or so, but it will do it if I have to come to a stop during the first 15 minutes -- which is almost everytime I use the car.

The car has 160k miles and has a manual transmission. It is a 2.2-liter engine. I fussed with all the electrical connections and grounds in the engine bay to make sure things were connected properly, and this did not make a difference. The car runs fine otherwise.

What should I look for? Is this an IACV (idle [something] control valve) problem? Should I clean the IACV? Any suggestions?

The IACV (idle air control valve ) is probably a good suspect to start out with. It could very well just be gunked up after 160,000 miles, but once the engine's fully warmed up it's OK? I dunno. Can't hurt to pull it off and clean it out, though, and see if that fixes the problem.

Try dropping the contents of a bottle of Cheveron Techron fuel system cleaner down the fuel filler and mixing with a full tank of gasoline, and see if that improves the situation some.

I have a '96 Legacy "L" with the 2.2 Litre and a "4EAT" Automatic that used to shake pretty bad idling at a traffic light, that seems to be behaving much better after 2-3 treatments of this stuff.
