Default My early xmas gift to myself

AKSERVAR2 - fileserver
My old pentium-d 930 from my desktop (replaced with core2duo 6600)
supermicro pdsla 945G mobo
2GB corsair memory
highpoint 2320 pcie 8 port sataII raid card
5x 500gb seagate 7200rpm 16mb cache drives in hotswap drive enclosure
250gb seagate 7200rpm 8mb cache sata OS drive
Coolermaster Stacker 810 case (it has CASTERS, SWEEET!!!)

Setting up this box was actually more of a PITA then any box I have built to date. First the machine encountered thermal issues. After a days worth of tinkering with the heatsink/fan, I finally got the thing to post and run for more then 30 seconds.

Then, the damn thing wouldn't boot when an array was initialized on the raid array! After some research I found out that I needed to use a BIOS flashing tool to set some hardware options on the card. So, if anyone sets up a RAID card on a box that they won't be booting from, make sure you disable int13 as well as ERBA or something like that.

so yeah, I think i've gone insane.

I'd give myself a red x, but I think that's illegal in CA. Like sodomy.

When I look at that I think, what home user really NEEDS 2 TB of HD space??

Then I remember back when a friend of mine bought a 1 GB drive for $1000.
Back then I was thinking, Who the F needs 1 GB of hard drive space???

Well, I have a little over 120GB now, I pull down about 10-15GB more each month not to mention when friends come over, etc. So yeah, it'll be a while before that fills up, but that was the point of sizing the volume that large

Yeah. I have a couple months worth already. I prolly have at least 40GB of music I have never once listened to. That is just the way it goes...

"why bother" is one of those questions you can never really ask anyone. Because there really is no answer other then "because."

Typicaly it is the same 40GB that I don't really listen to. But rather then delete the old stuff, I just keep it around.

It's not illegal until he starts selling it for profit. The day we concede that fact is the day we all forfeit our rights as electronics using human beings!

I could use it.

I have about 600 GB of space on my desktop here, and it's full. Had to delete things several times in the last few months.

I want to build a fileserver at some point in the near future.
