Default need new tranny or rebuild... Maddog?

Posting this for a friend, here in Soldotna. He thinks his tranny broke last night, 04 wrx. Not mine. I am not clear on all of the symptoms, but apparently it makes lots of noises and doesn't move the car anymore.

Maddog, do you have any 5MT wrx trannys for sale? Or, do you have time to rebuild another one?

If anyone else has a suggestion, please... thanks, guys.

Alaska being as small as it is, it was probably my friend. It would be pretty coincidental, otherwise. He didn't tell me that he called Conti already, he just asked me what suggestions I had for his situation. I said the first thing you want to do is check with the boys on NASIOC/AKIC!

well I priced him out (if it was him) a new manual transmission since Subaru does not offer a rebuild manual since they can be overhauled at a shop. Which btw would be cheaper for him. Labour more... parts a lot less. No additional charge for labour on clutch assy and flywheel since its all exposed removing a transmission. What did he do if I may ask? donuts in the snow?

He didn't specify exactly what he was doing when the failure occurred. He is actually my son's friend. I usually only hear from him when he needs assistance finding parts... . It's OK. I keep telling him(and my son) to join NASIOC...but...not...getting...through....

So, approximately how much was the quote for a new 5MT+accessories? And, why would doing donuts in the snow destroy your transmission?

is the car blue? ....."shudder".....

if so i did an alignment, car was in the worst shape of any wrx i ever worked on! both o2 sensors were unhooked, front one snapped off, leaky LEAKY headers, tons of other bad mods, (OT would make this guy a sticky ) and in fact i warned him that due to the poor running of the car he could easily shock the drivetrain to death...

same guy?...

and to date we've had 3 ruined tranny's from donuts in the snow...not broken gears, stripped syncro hubs

No Jerry that fellow is actually on here and he's from Seward.

Well I would need to check my notes at my desk... a new tranny from subaru would be about $3900 for the part. Add in several hundred more dollars for clutch parts and labour to do the job... it was looking in the $5000 range easy.

Sounds like it could be the same one you're thinking of. The car is blue and it does have some no name headers+UP on it that were leaking, Perrin DP, and some shorty intake, all without EM. It has a big rear wing, reminiscent of an STi. Definitely not the same mod path that I would take...

Thanks for the info about donuts. What does the damage to the synchro hubs? Does spirited drifting on snowy backroads also have the potential to damage these? Or is it just extended periods of high power/high rpms with the steering cranked hard over?

You know I always wonder how people do the things they do to their car. I never dragged my wrx, but I did go and rally quite a damn lot (rallying, drifting, whatever.. I did it). I never had any of these problems. Biggest problem I ever had was a blown exhaust gasket. Overall from that, all I ever did was oil change, fuel filter, basic fluid check/flushes, and that was it. At 57k miles, Mike drove my wrx up a hill in a very high gear and it never slipped or anything. Car was strong as an ox still. So it really makes me wonder how people can blow motors and trannys. I only give one exception to Mike himself because he has proven some crazy ass launches. But besides him...I always wonder what people are exactly doing? The 02 is supposed to have a "glass" tranny and I never had 1 problem with it. Everything newer is supposed to have thicker gears and such...I'm full of curiosity of what people do exactly.. I can also only see problems occuring around High stage 3-Stage 4 setups because of the increase in power. Stage 2 is only bolt ons and anything below is pretty much stock. So what people are doing...will make me wonder.

yeah jerry that header was messed up, the welds on it at the collector were cracked open plus the other exhaust leaks it had, as for the broken/cut o2 sensor wires well i won't go there, that was just scary

well most of us would never try this, but the damage occurs when you are rev-limiting in 1st and attempt to engage 2nd before the wheels stop spinning, and in the process grind the holy hell out of 2nd. i think alot of this has to do with stock engine/trans mounts flexing under load/no load, which in turn ruins your shifting accuracy. this is due to the mechanical linkage shifter subaru utilizes. if i could show you the difference on a lift between stock and group n/cusco mounts you'd buy in a second. grabbing the driveshaft at the trans end, i can make the trans shake up and down and side to side 2-3"s with just a little tug/push! with the group n's, both hands barely move it, and with the cusco's, good luck haha. the onroad result is better then any shifter/bushing mod you've ever done for shifting. plus the car shakes at idle...
