Question Air intake - 01 RS vs 00 RS

Couple days ago I picked up my 01 Impreza 2.5RS.
I absolutely love the car.. handles sooo nice.

Anyways, my car has had this deep, throaty, intake-like sound to it since the day I bought it. It was used, with 20k miles, so someone could have done something to it. It has some subaru exhaust (STI type thing?), but the noise is coming from the engine bay, like its an air intake. My friend who has a 00 stock 2.5RS pulled his up next to mine and we compared engine bays, and where the air intake ends, in the corner behind the headlight, I have a huge hole where he has a series of tubing and boxes. Also, off the side of my friends stock 00 air intake piping there is a cylindrical lookin thing that has no holes in it, It just sticks out and appears to do nothing. I have nothing that even resembles that slightly. Not even a hole where it could have once been.

I used to drive a 00 VW Golf, and in the VW world there are a multitude of "Ghetto" mods (aka DIY air intakes) that people do to their airbox. Such as drilling holes in the fender side of the box, and making their own CAI's using bigger piping then the stock snorkel. What I am wondering is if whoever had my car before me took out some big part of the airbox in attempt to get more air flow through, and if this is a common thing amongst Impreza drivers..?

Any input would be greatly helpful. Also if anyone has pictures of a stock 00 RS and a 01 RS engine bay they could post for me, that would be great too.

Thanks!

The MY00-01 RS's are exactly the same, save for the carbon trim that came standard on the MY01's.

The guy before you probably did modify the intake some.

well take a pic and post it. We'll definitely be able to tell you then what's missing. Another option is to go look through the members section for 01' rs's and compare...

Later,
Robert

Sounds like you have the intake snorkel removed. No biggie. Buy a ganz-flow or pdm intake to go from the plastic box attached to your throttle body to the fender and you'll be set.
