Default AEM engine management system (ecu)

Does anyone know anything about this product? the reason I ask is I am looking to replace the factory ecu of my xt6 so that I can performance tune after adding a few goodies. I"ve been trying to find someone to burn a chip but to no avail so the next step is EMS. Most EMS's seem to cost over $1000 although I was offered a used motec for half price only raced twice. I thought the AEM might be cheaper since it's made by AEM. Also later if I scrap the xt6 I think I could use it in my WRX or any other car for that matter it looks like a universal unit. Has any body else investigated this item if so please share your info with me.
Thank you
Paul

Lightbulb I suggest...

Its soo new that there hasn't been many users as yet. I would keep an eye out for Magazine Reviews and you should contact AEM directly and ask for some literature. Post what you hear.

Hi Paul.. The AEM comp is a pretty nice piece of hardware. I had a chance to play around with it and ask a bunch of questions at SEMA. The software is pretty nice and easy to use, as for the price for the WRX they sauid it would retail for around $1,500. This would replace your factory ECU and plug rite in with no adding sensors. You can download a tuning trial form AEM's website to see how trhe software is. It looked to me like it had pretty much endless tuning possabilities. Should be on the market in January...Gerry

Gerry can this unit be used on my 89 xt6 and if so do I need different software to switch to my wrx at a later time or do you really just plug it in as long as the wiring harnesses match up and program the varriables you desire until you get the max hp's. I assume this is done on a dyno.

Lightbulb I would think....

There should be no need for different software. As long as the vehicle is fuel injected, the supplied software is all you need. Now as far as compatibility, the style of harness will determine that and I would think that AEM will supply a universal wiring harness and all you have to do is splice in the vehicle's wiring harness into the AEM Harness's corresponding slot.

So, you need a Wiring diagram for your vehicle, labeling the different pins and their function and then just match that up to where AEM has that same function on their pins and your'e good to go.

Just like using a harness when installing a CD player in your dash. The only difference being that you have to cut off your vehicle's harness. So, leave a little wire on the stock plugs, so that you can remove the AEM unit and splice back your stock ECU.

Tuning is always best on a DYNO.
