Post what 'Backbox' should i get???

ive got a Sedan, 5speed. nonturbo (for the next 10 yrs or so). and i wanted to open up the exhaust, its Way to quiet.

thats probably why i have a Honest-to-God, straight pipe on my 88 RX7...talk about LOUD. right out the side...genuine race quality, complete w/ flames.

anywho, i looked at stromug, and heard they could be too loud. and Scoobysports rusting out. i have a Feeling a BPM 'twister' will be too expensive. so i was thinkin of a Apex-i N1, w/ the baffle.

remember, my dad is the primary driver, hes 44, and WAY past the 'loud and flashy car' stage in his life. its a stage, and hes out of it. i want a rumble, but he wants quiet, get what im layin down?

so what can yall suggest, while keeping in mind that, a 44 yr old, nuclear powerplant professional will be driving this back and forth to work for 5 days a week, and who is concerned about how his peers percieve him??

thanks
chris

the stromung is not loud. its very quiet infact. the n1 is probably 5x louder than the stromung. comming from your straight piped RX7 if you want loud go with a straight midpipe 2.25" or 2.5" to a n1 muffler. even the n1 is quiet compared to a straight pipe.

Impreza kid...'look man, ur focusin on the Wrong part of tha Story...' (joe dirt) my 7 isnt gettin the exhaust treatment, the Scooby is. the 7 is only a reference point, cuz my dad wants the scooby to sound NOTHING like my 7...he wants it WAY quieter than my strait-piped rotary rocket.

and im ONLY doing the back section, no mid pipes, no resonator removal, no hi flow cats, no headers, Nothing. just the muffler. so basically, the exhaust will be ALL stock, except for this Muffler that im tryin to pick out.

so maybe thatll help: thru the manifolds, OE cat/s, and OE resonator...will a scoobysport be so loud that it wakes the neigbhors? how bout the SS stromug, or what about the N1?

let me re-emphasize this, dad is very ANTI-'Kid Noise'.. ie; loud exhaust or stereos. im tryin to be tastefull about all this.

someone said that either the scoobysport or stromug only has a STainless tip or something...the rest is plain steel. i cant have this thing rusting out after 1 year. know what i mean, vern???

thanks for ur input.

chris

One way to get more noise for free is, loosen the bolts on your muffler. Or you could poke holes in your muffler, but that would be more permanent... I wonder how loud the 7 is. I drove around without a midpipe or a muffler (long story) and it was really unbearable.

Oh god, please don't poke holes in your muffler! He's not looking for "loud" folks, he just wants a low rumble.

I did a search for wav and sound and this is what I came up with. Might help. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Forum1/HTML/019226.html

Ridinlow -- ah yes, the lovely reflections-a-la-bling-bling from my dual tips -- it just happend to be in the picture. Next time, I'll be sure to animate them so that they really glow!

Anywayz, as for the Stromung only having stainless steel tips let me set the record straight. There are basically two "metal types" sold for each of the different models. The particular muffler I got was the stainless steel dual-tip Stromung muffler - hence the body and pipe of my muffler is not painted. You can also get the mild-steel version of the singal/dual tip Stromung. These mufflers have polished stainless tips, but the body and piping is made of mild steel, but painted in high-temp paint.

As for quiet and tasteful looking mufflers, the Stromung dual-tip in my opinion is a very classy looking muffler (aside from the lovely double-star reflection thats in my picture! ). As for sound, it is quite noticable. Some people find it "boomy" inside - I did at first, but I'm use to it now. Outside of the car, it is quite deep and rumbly (I love it!), especially at any RPM under 3k. Above 3k, my intake noise takes over!

Anywayz, back to other quiet but better flowing mufflers than stock - you *could* look for a universal Apex'i RS muffler and do a custom job for the piping. I heard that the RS model is quiet. Another alternative is to find a used STi V5 or 6 muffler off of here (which would be hard to find), or used off of the UK boards (http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk ) or you can by take-offs at SPD Tuning (http://www.spdusa.com )

North Ursalia (sp?) on the board *might* have the part number to the STi muffler on his web site -- you'll have to check.

Anywayz, that's about it!

well Dagnabbit. i was sorta leaning to the N1 w/ the blued finish (sorta like a blued Colt 45? hehe) but do you all think that would still be too loud even retaining the stock resonator, cat, and manifold?

and i dont like the tips on the scooby sport... the Ver2 had that set up, doesnt sit right w/ me. i want something close to a Grapefruit shooter, simply cuz it would be more aesthetically be-fitted to my Scooby...and the scoobysport doesnt provide that. see, cuz the ASS of the RS looks so Big (from the side, it looks SO tall too) that i feel that i have to have a complimenting exhaust tip under my bumper. and the N1 has that size im lookin for.

u know, if i can use the Baffle w/ the N1, i may just go w/ that. cuz dad can drive it w/ the baffle, and when i take it out on weekends, ill take the baffle OUT. and Unleash the beast, lol.

does anyone Know if the N1's are supposed to come w/ the BAffles and hardware? Modacar.com didnt mention Anything about any baffles, Scooby associate (marc buehler) said that they DO have baffles that u can remove. oh well, thanks for all the input, this is helpin alot...for Real.

oh, and regarding the 7...its HELLA loud. lets say, you could mistake me for one of those CrotchRockets that you hear winding out, Allllll the way across town. P haha...i just have to idle past cops, or tuck it in 5th gear and lug by... at 34 mph lol

thanks
chris
