Default High Idle

I have read a lot of the threads regarding high idle, but none of them seem to be the same situation that I am experiencing.

I have a 07 WRX, when I start the car cold the idle is around 1500-2000 rpms. Then after the car warms up it goes to normal 750 rpm idle. When I first purchased the car the cold idle was only slightly over 1000 rpms.

The situation started when I installed a K&N filter, the idle jumped to above 2250 rpms. After some research I decided to remove the filter, but after removing it the idle only went down to aprox 1750 rpm. Also if I touch the gas at all during the cold idle the rpms spike to over 2000 and slowly comeback down.

The car only has 1800 miles on it, and I did follow the break-in procedures. I have been working with cars for years and know the usual suspect for this type of situation (IAC, TPS, MAF, ect.).

This is my first Subaru, so my question is. Is this a normal cold idle situation? Should I pull the MAF and clean it (K&N issue), or just take it to a dealer and let them sort it out.

Thanks in advance

i'm guessing possible oil on the MAF... After that filtration webpage came out showing oiled air filters were the worst at filtration, i've been stepping away from ever using anything but OEM every... combine that with the oil leaking onto the maf and destroying it... reason enough never to use K&N.

That is definitely my thinking, K&N is out, Ill never use one again. Especially if the it destroyed my MAF. Is it worth trying to clean the MAF, or is it safer to have Subaru make the repair under warrantee?

I'd say if it can be replaced under warrenty then just let them do it so you can have a brand new MAF

You only have 1800 miles ? Take it to the dealer. A K&N filter does not affect your warranty. At least that's what my dealer told me.

I have had a K&N on my 06 since it had 1000 miles. I'm at 7000 now, with none of the problems you describe. Maybe the filter you bought had excessive oil in it, but I doubt it. Why would you even question taking it in to a dealer ?

I question the dealer because i have had bad experiences with them (not Subaru) in the past, and i am more than capable of making the repair myself (provided all i need to do is clean the MAF), Im not trying to pay for parts. It is looking like i will be taking it to the dealer.

I hear what you are saying about the K&N i had them on both of my previous cars and was happy with it in both cases. But this car does not like it, and I have read several threads with people having trouble with them. I just assume not push it with an oiled filter, Ill find another high flow filter solution.

would resetting my ECU be a good idea before going to the dealer?
Also does anyone know if the Subaru warrantee provides for a loner car?
