Default synchro issues

I'm having issues with my 2nd to 3rd gear shifts in my 2002 WRX. I think the synchro might be going because at every shift over 5000 RPM it grinds, and at some shifts over 4000 RPM it does the same thing. It's not my driving, because 3 other people have driven it and had the same problem.
The Subaru dealer wants the car for 3 hours to diagnose the problem. Should they give me a loaner becaues it is a warranty issue, or is that up to the dealer? When the car actually does get fixed, I'm assuming it will take a few days, what the policy on a rental then?
Should I have to pay for anything myself (the car has 9000 miles on it - I would think the warranty would cover everything)
Has anyone else had a problem similiar to this?
Thanks for the help?

It sounds like it should be covered...if it's your synchros. I was scared of the weak Suby tranny, so before I signed for my WRX, I went over to the service manager and made him look me in the eye and tell me that everything on the tranny is covered under warranty except for clutch plate wear and tear, which is understandable. I remember he specifically mentioned that the synchros were covered.

If it's going to take more than a day to repair the car they should give you a loaner. Most dealerships will only give you a ride somewhere and then pick you up later if the fix will only take a few hours.

I had my 1st gear synchro replaced and they kept the car a few days because once they opened it up they decided to go ahead and replace the 2nd gear synchro too. I got a crappy Grand Am, but at least I had a ride.
