I don't see it on this post (or I'm just blind!), what about 06 STI full take off with top hats, would that fit an 06 WRX?
edit: is that the same as the V9 suspension senerio involving spacer? Sorry I don't know if they changed the suspension at all for the 06/07 model on top of the engine and face lift. |

Top hats aren't the issue in that case - what won't fit is the 06 (or 05, or 07) STI front struts on the WRX (or any other Impreza) front hub/knuckle.

so basically any Sti strut will fit my 06, but if its from a 05+ Sti I have to slot 0.330" - BUT I have a GC so it's all a guess right now!>!>!>!

The GC rear tophat bolt pattern is different. V7 (bugeye) stuff can be made to fit by re-using GC rear tophats; later Impreza suspensions (including any USDM STi) have the tapered rear springs which won't fit the GC tophats.

you just need to slot the lower bolt hole up 0.330 and machine a spacer to makeup the width difference in the knuckle." Is there a writeup or diagram on this anywhere, or someone w/experience who could walk me through this? I have '06 OEM STi springs, '05 OEM STi struts, trying to fit an '05 wagon. I understand there are camber issues up front, but I figure if I'm slotting the struts anyway, I can fix that. Any help would be appreciated (oh yah: already know about "saggy butt". . . not a concern). THANKS. |

i have never seen a slotting writeup. i would PM tom and ask him to do a writeup. however, since we are dealing with suspension components, i would recommend bringing it to a machine shop of some sort.

as long as they're not from an STI sedan
The 04+ rear tophats are different, but that way round (new struts w/ old tops and springs) supposedly works OK without modification. You could use complete assemblies (i.e. 04-07 strut+spring+tophat) if you want 100% fit |

okay...
So, to clarify, I have an 02 WRX sedan. I plan on removing my struts and replacing them with struts from an 06 impreza sedan (not STi). My 02 top hats and springs will remain in my car, just the struts will be replaced. Will they fit and work properly? Thanks... |

Check out the thread I linked in post #28 (my old V7 springs + tops on an 06). I didn't do the install myself, but he seemed happy that everything fit.

Correct - inserts make the year of the strut bodies irrelevant

So, did the install on the weekend and the '06 impreza (sedan) struts do fit in the '02 impreza (WRX sedan) springs and top hats...
Now if you want to purely exchange the whole assemblies (struts/springs/top-hats) from an '06 impreza sedan into an '02 WRX...DO NOT DO SO.... Your car will literally be raised 1.5" -2"... both the top-hats and spring rates are different...we tried it first and my car looked like an SUV ...horrible...just thought I'd post my results... |

Now... will 2006 USDM STi springs / top hats do the same thing as you described? Was there a change between 05 and 06 with regards to STi springs/top hats? |

I believe, but I am not 100% sure that the top hats on the '06 whether they are from an rs, wrx or STi are different than the 02 WRX top hats.
And yes, I beleive there was a change between the 05/06 tophats. I would just use your 02 top hats with the newer struts...it worked great! Again, I am not an expert in the specific differences between the years so don't take my advice as gospel However, as mentioned I can 100% verify that 06 struts do in fact fit with 02 top hats and springs... Good luck! |

Hey there...no pics, and yes, I let the car settle for a good 20 minutes before taking it out and driving it pretty hard around some twisties...
Basically, the top hats on the 06 is shaped differently with a sort of riser which the 02 didn't have so the top hat itself added 3/4" - 1" in raise and the spring rate/size on the 06 sedan struts was different so not quite as low as my wrx springs... So, sorry, no pics, but trust me when I say it looked pretty bad! If you own an 02/03 wrx with stock springs, the back doesn't look bad but the front is quite high...well, put it this way, the back had just as much wheel/fender clearance as the front if not more (which is more necessary in the front to account for wheels turning) Just thought I'd post my results... |
