Default 2006 WRX w/ VF39 owners- how's your tranny?

I'm going to be upgrading my 06 TR to a VF39 with EWG and I'm wondering what others have experienced with their clutch and/or tranny.

I have seen a bunch of people with the 06s upgrading to the VF39 and I figured there would be enough people to chime in and let me know what I should expect.

This is a DD. I don't track the car at all. I never launch and know how to drive a stick very well so abuse will be the power of the car and not driver error.

Thanks for any replies.

-Matt

No problems yet but, I've only had it installed for about 1000 miles... I'm prepared to go PPG if need be.

well I've got the td05h16g (very similar in CFM to the VF-39) for over a year now. I've been racing at least once a week in both Solo 1 and Solo 2 class races. Drag raced once.

Transmission feels rock solid, for now...
As for the clutch the stock one only lasted about 6 month with the new turbo but it is my first manual car and I abused it a lot (especially in the first months)

Yeah, I searched it and I already knew that breaking the 06 tranny was the "in" thing but I was looking for the VF39 specifically since I am not upgrading further and the 39 seems to be a mild upgrade (in theory).

That's good to hear. I hope I don't have to upgrade my tranny for a 300 dollar turbo.

VF-39 installed for about 10,000 miles. Drag raced it about 15 times. Shot clutch, and busted 2nd gear. PPG 1-4 straight cut w/syncho's being installed right now. On the waiting list for an ACT clutch.

So I guess even with a turbo as small as a VF39, there is no hope for the WRX tranny.

I wish I had an STi.

The tranny has little to do with it. The final drive of 3.70 is the killer. If I had some energy, I'd find my post W A Y back in the day when we first heard the 3.70 rumor and I predicted the wheel 'o busted trannys would return and I was right.

I guess I know nothing about this.

I thought the ancient split case design combined with the ridiculous torque outputs from the 06s were to blame. But you're saying it's the final drive?

It definitely is the final drive... Puts a ton more stress on the gears especially with the 2.5.

More Torque + Less Leverage From Final Drive = More stress transmission

From what I've read, the split case design has very little (read:nothing) to do with WRX 5 speeds breaking.

Then would 5th gear experience more stress than 1st gear?

I have had a VF 39, STI TMIC, Cobb down pipe, and Cobb Access Port map on my 06 wgn for 5,000 miles, a little over 6,000 total on my wgn. So far the trans and clutch are OK but it has only been a daily driver.

fpgreen with 350whp on stock drivetrain about 6k miles now with no problems. i dont slam gears nor do i launch at every red light, in a matter of fact i dont even launch the car thats probally why its lasted so long.

before that i've had a vf39 with sti tmic and td05-18g. i started modding with the vf39 first at 5k miles and at 8k miles i decided to go with 18g ots map from cobb ap and at 13k miles i decided to go with the green now i am at 19k miles .
stock drivetrain tuned by clark turner with a fpgreen wrx tr

You'll be fine. My buddy's 06 has about 10K on it and we threw on a 39 the day after he got it.

For reference, I've got one of the first 02's off the boat, a VF39 making 275/275, and quite a few miles. I haven't even replaced my clutch. It's all about not driving like an @ss hat and/or side stepping the clutch every chance you get.
