im tryin to keep the mods to my car pretty basic for the time being, but i have read many posts stating that no mods should be done to these cars without proper engine management.. so my question is:
am i safe just running a k&n panel filter with removed silencer and a 3" catback?? i realize the catback will not really net me any gain at all, but i was really just looking for a little exhaust sound.. other than these "mods" my car will remain completely stock.. will i be safe running these things with nothing else done to the car?? thanks a lot!! ~Paul

I had removed my silencer and had an aftermarket catback before I got my EM and never had any problems with it at all. Mind you now that I have EM I cant imagine a world without it.

when you get into a full exhaust (which would be the logical first decent power mod) you'll want to get EM.

No problem. I might also add that it would be wise to get an aftermarket up-pipe installed when you do the turbo back exhaust, or gut your stocker, because pre turbo cats like to let peices of itself fly into the turbo once you get above stock.

one more quick question... what if i throw an uppipe into the mix??? i'll still have the stock downpipe, i just don't like the idea of having a cat in front of the turbo!! thanks again

Since you have a 03, you are safe even if you remove all the cat in uppipe and downpipe without EM. But not much gain doing so. Only 04+ em is mandatory.
