my car currently has a ej18 with 198k on it this engine is getting old
which would be cheaper and faster rebuilding my current engine and adding a few goodies (maybe a turbo) or just buying a newer ej22 im only looking to spending 1000 to 2000 i cant afford too much im almost out of college and i dont live off my parents so i cant go with a wrx or sti swap

A rebuild is almost always gonna be cheaper, but the end all is what your goal is? How fast do you want it? If you've got the mod bug like the rest of us your probably gonna get the rebuild and then want more.

You can get an ej22 for dirt cheap. Couple hundred bucks, and trust me, it has way more power than the ej18... just do that, ej22 low end is pretty good.

Dude, you can get a junkyard special 25sohc for 300$. Tack on a junkyard special ecu for 100$, and you have 600$ for labor, or do it yourself. I picked up a complete engine harness, ecu, and 2.0 wrx longblock for 450$. Tore it down and found it in good, clean, functional state. YMMV.
