I need to start off by saying how fantastic Big Al was in the tuning of this car. What was supposed to be a simple 2 hour road tune, turned into a 5+ hour test of patience for poor Al.

I had originally been running on a UTEC and was having difficulties with the RC injectors. They would run very lean at idle (18+ to 1) but would dump fuel at the slightest tip of the throttle. I won't bore you with all the UTEC variables I played with to solve these issues. But the idle was always a bit lopey and the car would be sluggish at anything but full throttle above 3,000 RPMs. Transistions between on-throttle and off-throttle were also very problematic as the injectors would, again, run lean off-throttle but would then run very rich on-throttle. It made setting the crossover points and advancing timing very challenging. Add to this the HKS EVC bringing boost on much quicker than stock, and my headaches just kept mounting. Al convinced me that EcuTek would be a better option and he went to work tackling the issues one at a time, hour upon hour, all the while assuring me it wasn't a problem and that he loves a challenge. In the end, everything runs perfect. The throttle responce is excellent, the idle is smoothe and I no longer have issues with high boost at partial throttle. It's like having a "like stock" running car when you want it to be and a fast wagon when you need it to be.

2002 WRX Wagon stock ej205 on 93 pump "winter" gas

RC 650 injectors (low impedence w/ resitor pack)

Bosal single tip cat-back
Borla headers (gen 1)
Generic up-pipe
Ebay TMIC
GP-Moto short ram intake

HKS EVC IV
EcuTek EM

The three dyno pulls were done the following weekend at Mach Vs dyno day.

1st pull @ 18 psi: 275 whp / 263 ftlbs

2nd (blue) 292 whp / 282 ftlbs and 3rd (red) @ 20psi: 291 whp / 283 ftlbs

Stock STis average 240 whp/ftlbs on this dynojet.

It should also be pointed out that this wagon has never made big power for whatever reason. My previous set-up: clipped & ported vf22 w/ pinks never got better than 260 whp/ftlbs @ 22psi on the same dyno.
Thanks for your time in posting and favorable review.

I was pleased to have the oportunity to tune this car and certainly the injector set up and a few other hurdles made it one of the more difficult tuning assignments I have had this year.

Personally, numbers on a dyno mean little to me, while there may be more power in the set up, the gas that was in the car and the rest of the mechanical condition of the car presented a certain "safe point" which I felt would be reliable, repeatable and safe while providing a acceptable power band and driveability.

For example, my Evo has never been tuned on a dyno - expect to make dyno sheets for magazine articles.

I only tune it on the track and road.

It went 9 seconds many times this season without any engine problems and I will start next years race season on the same motor.

I am very pleased the Op is happy and that is what matters to me.

Chris at XX tuning - I find your remarks about my ass size inappropriate and child like.

Sadly, I doubt they have any cars that can compete significantly with either my Evo or STI.

Victor and I were just having fun talking some trash that day and I was feeling fairly bad for him that the event that he traveled from Puerto Rico to attend was rained out. I think we made some fun for everyone and we all had a great time and ended the day hugging each other.

Even though I lost, it was a huge day for me as I was able to bog the car, come to a near complete stop and run a high 12 second pass at 147 mph !

The very next pass I achived my long standing goal of true HR9 Status - 9 seconds on radials, no nos, street legal car on full exhuast with a 9.8 @ 149.

I find it very amusing that a shop like XX spends its time watching my greatest kit videos of my track adventures - too bad they dont have any of their own.

Al, why do you keep quoting XX tuning? I am Chris, I do what I want on my own time, maybe I neeed to create a new username that doesn't have "XX" in it.

Secondly, we don't drag race "bro". You want to see accomplishments? Come to the shop and look at all the trophies we've won ROAD RACING (I can snap a pic for you if you like?). We do four hour track enduro racing wheel to wheel racing in NASA. All of our cars have won first place, our EVO's, our STi's and our Nissans. Drag racing, although exciting for 9 seconds, is not our specialty. We have built many drag race specific cars, including many 600+hp Mustangs and Corvettes and even a Supra here and there. There are plenty of pics HERE.

Yes, you have made some great accomplishments with your car, but take it out on the road coarse with us and let's see what that EVO can do for four hours of enduro racing. We would gladly take our STi out to the drag strip if you come out to Watkins Glenn or Pocono and race us as well.

Thanks,

Chris

First you are the sole tuner and an employee of XX - you use this on line handle to promote your tuning skills. As such when a large shop like XX that apparently is rather well off financially, having obviously enjoyed a great deal of success in this community, spends its time basically "picking" on a one man tuning entitey I find it rather pathetic. Basically, every single thread in the past two weeks that has referenced myself you have chimed in with snide insults and child like comments - such as the one referencing my personal appearance and my manner of spech.

The reality as I see it is that you must be some what threatend by the fact that there is a competant tuner in this area offering a choice to the customers at a fair price.

Holding a monopoly on the tuning services in our area for Subarus must have been rewarding but those days are over.

If the best you can do for yourself is poke fun of my weight and way I speak then I think that speaks volumes for you and the way you run your business.

Claiming that this is your personal account or a business account is irrelevant to me - you still are the tuner at XX and you should act with a more professional manner.

As for your reference to your great ROAD RACING SUCCESS, surely you know that i have been to the SCCA national championship run offs the past two years tuning T2 Evos? (Sadly, my customer came in right behind the SOA sponsored STI's (tuned by Franz), never the less, my customer completed the entire event both years on the same motor and finished 5th this year.

I have tuned so many other successful road racing evos that it is pointless to list them all in this thread.

Sufica to say - I am no newbie to tuning road race vehicles. Do I race road race - NO. But, I am a tuner on a limited budget and that form of motosports is beyond my means.

600 whp mustangs and camaros - are you serious bro? My idea of impressive is a 600 whp evo or STI that is a daily driver. Please.

As far as your accomplishments with Subarus, from the best I can gather you are a subaru newbie with limited experience and back round in tuning these vehicles.

It is no suprize that you have no fast subarus to your credit which have held together to win any drag racing events.

I would suggest you re-direct your time spent making insults about my appearace and focus that energy on customer satisfaction.

Kindest regards.

Al

Sadly your IQ level is not up there with your body mass

Please - a suggestion - STAY OUT of my customer's threads about cars I have tuned

As an example you will notice I do not chime in on threads where you or your customers talk about tuning work that you have done

Sincerly, I find your presense in this thread making such comments very unprofessional

The last thing I wanted was for this post to turn into some kind of gauntlet throw down between tuners.

I would also like to reinterate the point that Al really was a pleasure to work with. Despite all the issues we had with my injectors and the various other technical and software problems, and also that he had 3 more people waiting behind me, Al never once showed any frustration, and refused to give up until he thought the car was where it should be. We were even able to run beyond 7,500 RPMs with no ill affects. A feat that has never been accomplished on my car before, dispite my and three other tuners attempts. My bet is that many other tuners faced with these issues, and knowing that others were waiting, would have quit shortly into the tune and not gone the extra mile that Al did.

I should also note that Al was right on the mark of where he thought this car would be after he tuned it. His remarks were something to the extent of: "You've got a quick car here bro, it's got good torque and throttle response but it doesn't quite feel like a 300 whp car." And "I think you've got some bad gas in here bro. This winter stuff can really be crap."
