Default 2006 Impreza RS Front Speaker Install!!

I've taken my impreza into a car audio shop and I was told that none of the component speakers would fit in my vehicle. The doors are supposedly too shallow, even with a spacer he claimed that the speakers would rub on the interior panel. Has anyone successfully replaced the front speakers with something other than stock? If so what speakers did you use and what did you have to do to make them fit?

nope, everyone here runs stock drivers.

Seriously though...read the FAQ and Manifesto at the top of the page...your questions will be answered.

I read the manifesto and it did not answer all of my questions. As far as I can tell most of those mods are for 2002-2004 models which have a slightly different door panel than my 06. Also none of them actually list what model components they were able to install. I have seen the spacers at www.iaperformance.com
So does one ring go beneath the speaker to space the magnet away from the metal door panel and the other spacer on top of it to space the plastic door panel off of the speaker?

They told me the same thing when I was getting some 2.5" deep 6.5" speakers installed. After looking at it again, they said they trimmed off something on the interior of the door panel and they fit.

The door panels are different, but it's in a positive way. 05'+ have a little more room for the panels to fit back on. You can fit a 2.5" deep 6.5" driver with a 3/4" spacer in all the cars and the panels will fit back on without rubbing. You can go a little deeper with the 05+ models, maybe as much as 3" according to some. Is it a drop in fit, no. But with a spacer, you can fit a fair amount of drivers in there, espeically ones designed for use in the auto environment. DO SOME RESEARCH

Well thats interesting....they told me they had not a single speaker that would fit in my door. If anyone has a model number of some speaker they got to fit in an 06 and hopefully some installation pics that would be awesome.

You should probably find a better shop if they are that dumb. Pretty much any 6.5" speaker with less than 3" of depth will fit on the 06 doors. You'll need a spacer, probably 3/4" to 1" depending on the speaker you get.

Oh yeah, and do a search! There's plenty of pics on here.

it's because you have a 2006 RS, if you had a 2006 2.5i they'd have lots of speakers for you.

Hrmmm. Well thats very interesting, perhaps they were just trying to sell me on a more expensive install. I've always done my own installs in the past but this is my first NEW NEW car. I didn't want to take any chances.

I guess the issue wasn't so much getting it into the door, but then once it was in that it would be hitting the plastic panel when the speaker moved.

Thanks for all the help, I'll take it elsewhere.

Your a hoe.

Hey scuba, I fit a 3" mounting depth speaker in the front foors of my 06...RS, and it worked fine. I'd suggest finding a piece of 1" MDF, a router with a circular jig, and some free time. I used 3/4" MDF, but it needs to be 1" for a 3" depth.

Here's the ugly:

This was without a 1" thick piece, which I'm sure would have worked perfect. The very tip of the R touches my doorcard if you push in on the doorcard at all, but it does not vibrate the plastic.

My only other suggestion is with that 1", you might need to trim a tiny but to make the speaker clear the doorcard, I'm not sure though. Also, grab a strip of weather stripping or something to help seal the bottom of the spacer ring when all is done.

~Levi

That really sweet clay is the way I sealed and added density to my speaker spacers.

Damn you 05+ guys and your extra room!!

Although I have to admit that aiming the midrange drivers a bit up and back as I did in my fibgerlass pods dramatically widened the soundstage and overall sound.

As others mentioned, it's fairly easy to find speakers to fit the 05+ cars, you just need a simple spacer!

I suggest NOT going to this installer. Find another one...

I know the older imprezas have less options, but I find it unequivocally impossible to believe that you have NO options for new mids...

Yeah...Thats what I thought. I have a 2006RS and I'm looking at the Polk Audio db6500 which is listed with a 2" top mount depth. That should fit EASY according to what you guys are telling me. I ordered the spacer rings from http://www.iaperformance.com today so I'll see what I can do after they arrive. I didn't want to use MDF as it will absorb moisture like a sponge. Thanks a ton for all the advice, I will keep you guys posted as to what I find out.

You'll be fine, the Polk dBs are one of the easiest speakers to fit in our doors.

Oh, and there is no 2006 2.5RS. You know that, right?

Haha, ya. RS = pre 06. i = 06+

I hope that IAperformance works for you. Yes, the MDF left untreated will grab moisture and mold. I just pulled one of mine for a project and it had some green buds on it I'm going to re-doing these spacers, and when I do I am going to be treating the MDF with something to prevent this.
