Default 02-03 WRX vs 04-05 WRX vs 06-07 2.5i

Alrighty, here it goes:

Given a budget for a used 02-05 (up to 45,000 miles) WRX or brand new 06-07 2.5i, which would you purchase? Any reason to buy a 04-05 over the bugeye version other than not having bugeyes?

*flame suit on!*

Thanks,
Michael

Depends on where the WRX came from. Do you know if it has been taken care of or ragged out? If you can find one you know something about I vote turbo baby! I had 2000 Legacy 2.5 no boost. It was a great car, never a problem, but really needed more power. Same engine as Impreza. Get an 06+ TR for around 23-24 grand. Cant beat that for the $$$$.

There are many things that changed between the years. There were some small changes in the tranny throughout the years as well as ECu changes and changes in the cabin. All in all I would say for an all around car I would take the 2005 WRX mainly because of the redesign of the center counsel and the addition of the automatic climate control.

But that is not for everyone so you need to make up your own mind. Some people don't like the climate control and some people hate the way the 04/05 looks. You need to decide what is important to you and choose accordingly. There are many threads in this forum about the changes between the years. Just do a simple little search.

You are comparing apples and oranges and only you know which you want!

You are trying to pick between a used performance oriented car with 45K miles and an uncertain history of use and abuse, versus a nice new sporty sedan.

How much do you care about the performance?
How much risk can you afford for big ticket items that go wrong?
How long do you plan on keeping it?

The new 2.5i is a much safer bet in terms of reliability and low cost of ownership.

Thanks for the speedy replies!

Performance? I'd like more oomph than my 1.6L '92 miata can put out. I actually test drove the '06 2.5i (120 miles on the clock), WRX TR (12,000 miles), and '05 WRX (29,000 miles), in that order. I was just about set on the 2.5i until I test drove the WRX TR, which was priced a modest $4000 more than the 2.5i. The thing was quick, but the interior was just a little sub-par for a $20,000 vehicle. Power delivery was amazing - as expected of a flat 4 turbo, and it handled like a dream.

Today I drove an older, '05 WRX around the dealer parking lot. It is priced $1000 less than the '06 2.5i and the interior is the WRX TR's plus some. I must say I cannot notice a difference in power between the 2.0L turbo and the 2.5L turbo. I can only assume that the 2.5L can handle more boost, but I'm not looking for a 600awhp monster street car.

Guess which car got the deposit?

Save up buy a used 06WRX, honestly homie dont waste your money on a 2.5I, or if you HAVE to have a car now buy a late model 03WRX that was built damn near in 04 that way you dont get the REAL crappy tranny. Or find the cheapest Highest mileage peice of dog **** 02 WRX and do a jDM swap, or screw the BS and get a 2.5RS and do a 2.5 06 WRX swap go 20G and crap on every 11 second STi in your local area.

Eh and the 2.5 cant handle more boost then the 2.0liters it will just make more power, and a monkey can tell the difference in power between an 06WRX and the 05's and down, you musta driven one that has never been driven hard so the ECU isnt running at its maximum. Find a Demo car at a subaru lot it should be faster then the one you test drive.
