Default The ubiquitous "I need a TV" thread..$1K range

I'm thinking about making the plunge. I sold my old 27" Sony to my sister a few months ago and have been TV-less this whole time. I had planned to wait until March(in hopes that Vegas is good to me in late Feb.) but might just buy it now instead.

Here's the info:

$1K limit...preferably no higher. Less is good
Decent sized screen, need not be huge
I live in an apartment on a 2nd floor and have no urge to move a giant CRT big-screen again
HDTV is necessary

I like DLP's. The rainbow effect isn't noticeable by me.
I saw this on Amazon: Samsung HL-S4666W 46" DLP HDTV
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HL-S46...&s=audio-video

It's about the highest I could hope for I guess. 720p is fine for me. I won't even have Digital Cable for the first few months. This will be strictly OTA and DVD movies for right now. I just want a decent set for when I move into a house in a few years.

LCD is fine too. But being more expensive, I understand I'd need to go to a smaller size. I guess I'd like something at least in the 32" range. I have a rather large living room and will be approximately 7-11 feet from the TV, depending where I set it.

I'm browsing AVS Forums...but for general recommendations, that place is crap. I can easily review specific models there after I get a few suggestions.

I would prefer to buy at a brick and mortar, but have no reservations about ordering online too. If you know of a great deal on a 32" range TV that's not 200lbs, and half my price limit...that'd definitely be worth hearing about.

All I hear about the Samsung is good. I've pretty much made it my choice in the next few months.

I've also been searching for a new television set in that price range. I like the selection you have from amazon.com

Standing by for more people to respond with what could be similar or better deals.

At 7 feet from the screen, a 32" tv will be small but okay. At 11 feet it will be tiny.

I Just bought a samsung hls-6187w about a month ago. Can't say enough good things about it. It's a DLP, 61" with 1080p. I think that 720p would be fine for a tv under 42" though.

I'm not too worried about 1080p. I don't want a 50" + set right now. I figure...at 46" tops(probably a 42" or something)...I can use this as my sole TV at the apartment, then, when I move into a house in about two years, perhaps I'll buy a nicer, bigger TV then. This will be relegated to bedroom or some other duty. I just think the added expense I'd pay to get a 1080p set just isn't worth it for me. I won't be buying HD-DVD or Blu-Ray for quite some time. Most programming won't take advantage of it, and I don't video game on them either. So it doesn't offer much benefit to me right now.

NewEgg has a deal right now on a ViewSonic 32" LCD. It's 1080i.

$599 if you have all the right promo codes. I'm seriously thinking about getting one for my upstairs living room.

You have a video only or circuit city nearby?

Video only has a 46 inch DLP samsung that I am going to pickup for 900. You could probably talk them to 800 or less since they have a fast turnaround.

Circuit City has a 42 inch samsung DLP for 900. It isnt marked at 900 but they will beat others prices. Just tell them video only has the 46 for 900 and they will mark it down to that or more. I had two salesmen in Circuit city fighting over the price with each other for me. They ended up dropping it to 800 but I passed since the girlfriend doesnt want a TV quite yet. You can tell they are paid on comission.

What is Video and do they have a website? I live up in the NH/Maine area and have never heard of "Video" as a store. Do you think Circuit City would honor a price from an on-line store?
