Default 92 legacy - couple of questions

Hi all,
i'm new to the subaru world. i have inherited a 92 legacy awd 2.5L auto wagon. auto transmission is completely ruined. found drive shaft to replace former pretzel-shaped driveshaft. everything else on car operates just great and the engine runs like a top.

i would like to replace the transmission and return the car to daily driver status.

what i.d. numbers should i look for?
where would the numbers/number plates be located on the transmission?

if you need more details, let me know. hopefully someone can help me with these details, so i don't waste a lot of time locating the wrong parts.

THANKS!
-Gary

Are you sure it's a 2.5L? That would not be a stock configuration on any pre-96 car.

No...Subaru never had a 2.4L

A 2.2L was stock on all Legacys of that model year.

cool, i'm sure i'll learn more about them as i work on it, so please forgive my lack of knowledge.

any i.d. numbers on the trans case or wherever that i can use to find a proper replacement - as in, what year cars/wagons/models may have used the same transmissions?

thanks

You'll find this'll be the answer to many of your questions: Subarus are like legos...pretty much everything works between models.

that being said, any EJ engine and any EJ transmission will be interchangable. Anything from any Impreza, Legacy, Forester, etc.

Just make sure you match up gear ratios to the rear differential.
