Default Bosch Icon vs Valeo vs Trico beam windshield wiper blades

A few months ago, I found out about the Valeo/Bosch/Trico beam windshield wiper blades, and decided I need to try these.

Got 2 Trico beam blades, and they were worse (chattering, squeeking and squealing, uneven wiping, and this was with warmish weather and rain) than the OEM wipers on my wife's minivan. Returned them, got my money back.

Got 4 Valeo's (buy one, get one free from TireRack a few months ago)... 3 went on my wife's minivan, and she likes them... the 4th I got for my passenger side windshield wiper.

I also got at the same time a Bosch Icon for the driver side windshield wiper. Head-to-head comparison.

So far, the Bosch Icon wiper has worked flawlessly. Quiet, even wiping, even with 9 degree F temperatures this morning.

The Valeo... not as impressive. When it works, it works well, but the blade part has already separated once from the frame, made it wipe unevenly... I was able to shimmy the blade/frame back together, and it's worked OK since then, but since yesterday, when it *finally* got below freezing in the greater Boston area, it has taken a "set", and is not wiping in the middle of the blade (and yes, I did check to see if it was ice on the blade... it is not due to ice).

The Bosch Icon wiper appears to be more "integrated", and the chance of rubber separating from metal appears to be unlikely just from inspecting the design of the blade. It is more substantial/heavier than the Valeos, but it works well, and I doubt it will cause my wiper motors to burn out before OEM wiper blades would.

I repeat... the Bosch Icon windshield wiper blade has worked as advertised... flawlessly. Really nice, worth the money... I hope they last more than a year, but I would get them again at this rate.

Trico beams -> not worth the trouble.
Valeos -> not as well built as the Bosch Icon, but work well if they don't come apart
Bosch Icon -> top quality, top function, well worth the premium price IMHO

There's an old Portuguese saying "que compra mau pano vai duas vezes à loja" (He who buys bad cloth goes two times to the store)... which is exactly what happened to me... bought the cheap Tricos, and had to return them and pay for the better blades in the end.

And if it wasn't for the BOGO deal on the Valeos, I would have just stuck with the Bosch Icons. Learn from my mistake!

Next up, Bosch Icon for me.

I have PIAA silicones now and am impressed but would like to try the Bosch.

I'm happy with my Valeos... my only complaint is that they don't press down hard enough on the very edge of the windshield at the bottomr side where there is maximum curvature. I doubt the Bosch Icons would hit it either though.

I have the Bosch Icons on my car, and they still work well after a year of use. They are definitely worth the extra money.

I just installed the Icon's and they rock! They are way better than that OEM garbage.

The Valeo wiper I had on my passenger side... last week in the middle of the first real winter storm in the Greater Boston area, it broke... part of the frame that held the actual wiper bits broke, and left a disfunctional wiper frame screeching on my windshield during snow, sleet and freezing rain.

I coughed up the money for another Bosch Icon, and I don't think I'm going to regret it.

Wow, you guys are luckier than me!
When I had the Icons... they started streaking like my $5 Rain-X blades inside of 2 warm weather months.
I've had Valeos on before the winter and they have performed perfectly through these few weeks of bitter cold and that icy rain and snow storm. Still working great!!
Just my experience. Glad they worked for you!!

I've only ever bought bosch wiper blades for my cars. i've recently installed Icons as a modern substitute to the old bosch "aero" that had an integrated air foil (not available in the US). Great performance at speed, with the aero blade keeping the wiper down, especially the passenger side that doesn't have a standard aerofoil.

Definitely recommend these blades.

never tried the Icons, but like Arnie I had always used Bosch blades. Heard about the Icons last year but could not find them at the time so I went with Valeos from TireRack. They were great, easily the best wipers I've ever used. At one year old they still outperformed new Bosch Excels. I normally don't get too excited about wiper blades, but I told my friends and relatives and bought two sets for my parent's cars. Everyone says the same thing - best wipers they've ever used. My parents and 1 brother have had significant experience with them on four vehicles in snow and ice with no issues and great performance.

In any case, with 2-for-1 going on at TireRack with the Valeos I just bought another set along with another 4-pack of Aquapel.

Rain, what rain?

+1 for the Bosch Icons. I picked some up a couple weeks ago. They work very well, even in cold/icy weather. We'll see how well they hold up this summer

Another satisfied Icons user here, but then again the stockers worked very well for me as well. I just hope they last a reasonable amount of time since they're not cheap.

Rain-X has also jumped on the beam wiper design bandwagon.

I was a big fan of the Bosch Micro Edge Excel when those used to be $20 each, now they cost $10 which is worth the money but these Bosch Icons completely blow them away. I was already paying $20 each for Micro Edge Excels, so paying $20 for Icons seems like an AWESOME deal.

I love these wipers!

I first tried the Costco Teflon blades, they didn't work and I returned them.
Next was RainX from Walmart, worked fine, then streaking started.
I finally gave up and went for the ICON at $20 a piece at Autozone.
At last, wiper blades that work!
3rd times the charm =)

yup...i'm bumping a year and a half old thread

anyone have any updates on the 'beam profile' wipers? i've been considering the rain-x ones...but noticed there wasn't a review for them in the thread.

and i'm pretty sold on the bosch icons now.

just wondering if anyone had some input. my piaa silcones are starting to get a bit dried out (almost 3 years of service though )

Default icons vs. rainx?

Any opinions on Icon vs. RainX blades? I've had icons for a while, and the two brands are the same price here. Salesman at one store recently tried to tell me I wouldn't know the difference, but they didn't carry Icons.

Default Icons vs. RainX -

I used the RainX blades and replaced them with Icons a few thousand miles ago. The Icons were better straight out of the box than the RainX blades (as expected), and still clear the windshield like new. The RainX ones weren't bad, they just weren't that good compared to the Icons (though the RainX blades I had were cheaper than the Icons IIRC).

Can't say how the Icons perform during a hard (Northern NY) winter - I just used cheap (with the red tips, Trico maybe?) blades once the temp dropped.

I've been in the market for wiper blades for my 08 Outback and came across this thread. I noticed that it is just under a year old, I'm very interested in a follow up reveiw. Are they still preforming well?? About half the reveiws I've read said the Icons didn't last very long and that concerns me. In the winter here it can go sub-zero for days and even weeks and in the summer it can be well above 100. Thanks for the review. Tim

Your car is an 08 so it's probably safe to assume you're still on the 3yr/36k warranty. Subaru replaces wiper blades for free for 3 years/36,000 miles. Just keep getting their free wipers while you can, even if you have to get new ones every few months (although I was able to get over a year out of OEM wipers).

My Icons worked fine at first, but in less than 2 years their performance has degraded to the point that I will never consider buying them again. YMMV but they chatter, smear, and leave big spots right after a wipe. I got an alcohol towelette and cleaned the blades, removing lots of old rubber and gunk but they still dont wipe worth a damn.
