Default Air silencer removal: can you just remove it? Multiple ???s

Hi.
I was wondering if you could just remove the silencer. I hear that some people are cutting the original silencer or covering a certain hole that is created. What are the pros and cons of
A. Keeping the silencer out and the hole present
B. Cutting the silencer and replacing it in.
C. Taking alternate methods to patch the hole.
Last, will this affect the warranty? Will I need to put the original silencer back in?
Thanks everyone; my searches did not seem to find much in comparing the methods at performing this mod.

i removed mine completely. Maybe down the road i'll cut it and put the Y part back on so that it fits the ram air scoop. But been running it like it is for about 2000 miles now with no problem at all.

Sounds awesome.

Go for it!

I have been thinking about doing that too, well come this summer when my car comes in. But as far as your warranty goes. NO it won't void anything. SOA will have to prove that you cutting that off and patching it caused what even problem you have with your car. I think it would be the same kinda thing with a aftermarket intake. And I would think as hard as it is to even remove the darn thing how would they know anyway? Doesn't the inner fender cover it?

Default Humm ...

What exactly is the silencer on the WRX? Does anyone have pics and how to remove it? Does it really make a performance difference or is it just for out own ears? Thanks.

Removing the intake silencer is dyno proven to add up to 5 hp. I dont know where I read that but i remember seeing the graphs.

Default INtake Silencer Remov

I removed the silencer following the instructions in the "MODS section" and its been running fine.. i would suggest replacing the stock filter with a hi-flow one(i used K&N to get full effect... try taking the bolts off first before cutting the silencer off, its sorta hard at first but you might have to have someone clamp the other side of the bolt thingy so it doesn't spin when you try to take it off; well i did anyway, but i'm not good at that stuff- don't worry about the subie, i've got 12,000 miles on mine and i race it all the time.. and try to get sideways at least a few times a week; especialy after it rains and the ground is damp FUN!!!! AWD is Good!! - i haven't any problems at all.

Samirr76,

even though I have my silencer removed I would never believe that w/o a true dyno plot. The silencer isn't that restrictive... and if it did on average give an extra 5hp, why isn't everybody doing it or even feeling it? I say just do it for the sound alone... it'll add a extra 5 mental horsepower at the wheels... hehe, but thats just my opinion

Removing the silencer doesn't really do anything except add noise, the K&N air filter though actually showed a power loss when dyno'd (1-2hp at the wheels, not much but still).

this was my solution:

http://www.i-club.com/forums/attachm...postid=1081444

yes, it does fit in the airbox and I put the elbow in to catch air coming in from the underhood scoop... it works well, doesn't move... etc etc... *shrug* nice temporary solution..

check out this thread to see what some people did:

JEff 2.5RS-
is that a loss of 1-2hp at the wheels using the K&N? i use one but never been on dyno to see effects with silencer out- it seems to work well though, i didn't know it could make your car lose horsepower though

keep in mind that dyno numbers can change from one run to the next without ANY changes to the car itself... the dynojet is known to have that problem...

1-2hp dyno loss (IMO) is inconsequential, given that I've dynoed other cars in the past and seen variances of 3-5hp in back to back runs (and not always a decrease from run 1 to run 2 to run 3 as might be expected with the engine getting hotter or something to that effect).

FWIW, my silencer is out and I've got a K&N... noticed anything? nope... just sounds meaner...

I did the silencer chop method. Kept the Y-joint in, but chopped the rest of it off. So the ram-air helps kick more air into the fenderwell. As far as warranty goes, i don't think they'd ever notice it wasn't there unless they took out the wheel-well cover. Do a search on "silencer removal" or "silencer mod", there's tons of info. I pretty much followed the steps at projectwrx i think. It's really easy and I don't know squat about cars. Haven't really noticed any hp differences, but you get a nice whoooshing sound when yer givin it some gas... sounds pretty cool, and not abnoxious at all.

I took my silencer out, along with the air scoop/intake, left
it that way for about a week. Pretty loud.
When I got some more time, I hacked the "Y", put it back in.
Felt like it looked 'stock' that way...either way, I think you're
fine with a dealer.

Here are some pics (good quality) of what I did:
http://www.cartogra.com/home/ViewMyA...oll_id=1108590

I've also got .AVI files of before and after the removal if
anyone is interested (some have said they could hear the
difference in the AVI, some have said they couldn't. YMMV).

I seem to feel more low end power, and have a faster turbo spool up w/ Silencer removal.

But then again, could be the ear to but dyno

I just finished this mod on my two week old WRX. I currently have done none of the optional stuff, simply removed the silencer.

2700 miles

The only mods I have done right now are:
3/16" coupler on turbo sol
silencer removal

Maybe my butt-dyno is less prone to ear-interference, but I noticed more of an improvement from the 3/16" coupler. I have yet to really push the car, but I just noticed more with the 3/16" that the car seemed to be pulling earlier. I'll have to give it another test-spin, it's hot and I'm waiting for somebody to show up so I can't really go out very far

I removed the silencer and it seems as though low-end power is not as good,

I chopped E.T.'s body off and plugged his neck w/ a cap and I have to install it to see how thats going to work..

I also have the stock underspoiler kit, and I wonder if it restricts more air from going underneath through the hole, because it has to go through a smaller one now...

I have the UK side spoilers, and side spats on now (not in pic thou)
