Default Rear diff & axles FAQ

jared's school on rear diffs, axles and splines:

there are at least 6 setups
on the diff side:

22 splines - early diffs and non LDS diffs .. identifiable by single large flower looking nut on side of diff assembly pict

25/20 splines - early jdm LSDs -identifiable by plate and 5 bolts on side of diff - 3 sets of teeth are visible if you look through the diff axle is dual spline axle has tapered end and spirals befor the splines pict, pict

25/19 splines - early jdm LSDs -identifiable by plate and 5 bolts on side of diff - 3 sets of teeth are visible if you look through the diff most likely from a earle JDM legacy 89-99 pict

25 splines - later diffs and LSDs -identifiable by plate and 5 bolts on side of diff

outtie - has a male spline setup on diff (89-93? legacy turbo only) look like front axels pict

R180 - ????

on the hub side:

r160 hubs have 24 splines
r180 hubs have 27 splines

here is where it gets tough
axle lengths changed some where around 2000
in an older GC for example the the drive line is centered in the car. due to one side of the diff being bigger the passenger side axle is longer (driver shorter)
in the new cars say a gda or 2000+ legacy the diff is off-center and the axles are the same length

the difficult thing is to find a set of unequal length 25 spline axles i found a set on a 98 forester w/ lsd

the open 25 spline spider gears are much bigger than the 22 spline opens ..

picts of a r180 and L diffs would be helpfull pm me if you need hosting

Very cool. Looks like we are getting some good drivetrain info compiled.

Hmm...regarding center/off-center drivelines and axle lengths...do you think I would have a problem swapping an '04+ WRX drivetrain into a '92 Legacy SS?

I'm sure you already know but since you have a section on axle length you might want to add in that the 05+ STi's also have longer axles by 0.5".

It sounds like a bad knueder valve: after a while oxygen (from the CAI) builds up on the malarganite seating surfaces causing windage flutter which could be the cause of your oil consumption.
Edit: This is a bad joke.

one year bump...
when did they switch over to 25 spline for the open diffs? I'm going to guess 96 with the tranny as well.

my 95L and 96 had same axles. my 98 OBS(and V4 STi) had the same spline count as newer WRX/RS/foresters and was different than my 95-96L. some later 96 build dates(my97) may have had this running change like the phase I/II era of engine build dates.

just what i've encountered so far!

subscribed.

I'm too tired to read this and count splines right now, but I'm trying to figure out what shafts I need for my newly purchased mechanical 4.11 rear LSD from V2 or V3 JDM WRX (seller did not know which version).

I've been looking for a good thread on this for several days now. I'm so happy I finally found this.
