Default UOA: '02 WRX, M1 10W-30/15W-50 EP Mix, 5.5K Miles

Here's a recent UOA for my car. I installed a Perrin turbo inlet hose and their IC hoses during this OCI so that probably accounts for the slight increase in silicon.

What impressed me was the SUS Viscosity @ 210 degrees of 63.6! My previous UOA with straight M1 10W-30 was a pathetic 56 or so. A little 15W-50 EP does a nice job of thickening up the oil with no ill effects. I tweaked the mix for my current OCI and I'll post up my next UOA if it shows more improvement.

It goes to show that with a simple mix, even the much maligned M1 does just as good as that other stuff...GC!? I don't need no stinkin' GC!!
(just kidding- I know there's lots of GC lovers out there and it's good stuff )

Well, if you used GC it might stay in grade instead of shearing to a 20 weight. Congrats on figuring out how to make an M1 30 weight stay in grade. drees is one of the few WRX owners that the M1 seems to stay in grade for, even with a 7,500 mile OCI.

Nice report. I can't get my silicon down to the single digits, even with an OEM air filter. You're probably right about the hoses. How much 15W50 is in there?

For everyone's info, 63.6 SUS = 11.2. cSt
That's falling on the slightly thicker side of a 30 weight oil.

Good job with the mix

Actually, if I didn't have this stash of M1 to use up I'd probably be staking out all the local Autozones in search of GC like others afflicted with the sickness.

Why do you think your silicon stays in the double-digits? Maybe a dusty environment? As far as my mix, I added in one quart of the 15W-50 and .5 as make-up oil.

Thanks. I went thicker for my current fill so it should be closer to the high-side of specs. It looks like wear and protection stay pretty constant regardless of what grade of M1 I use, so minimizing oil consumption is my main goal.

I live in New Jersey.

I don't know. Maybe it's because I drive on the beach. For my air filter I started this car with a five year old Amsoil panel filter and then switched to OEM with little change. My wife's car always shows lower silicon than mine with a 4k OCI on dino and a K&N panel filter. Maybe I'll have Terry Dyson check it out.

Judging from the low number of views of this thread, perhaps UOA threads should have a different subject. Usually threads with little facts (what's better? Oil X or oil Y?) and a lot of misinformation (only 5W30 is allowed by Subaru) get the most views, but threads with facts get the fewest views.

Some suggestions:
"r u burning M1?...........Read this to make your M1 thickAR"
"Mobil1 is NOT teh suck and I have PROOF"

Any more?

Oh well, it is what it is. You two guys and a few others are the only ones who seem interested in this type of info. Viva "which oil is bettAR?" threads!
