extreme attention to detail indeed.

I've only seen this car in the finished product, this build is insane.

Very very nice!

Round 7 - Out of the paint booth

While we were waiting for the interior to come back from Stitchcraft in California, we decided it was time to take the car out to remove months of dust and what not. The surface was nice and hard, but needed to be squeaky clean before we started color sanding and buffing to get that glass-like smoothness. We drove it with no interior, just the instrument cluster propped on what was left of the dash skeleton, down the street to spray it off.

Exterior is about 80%. Still missing the front lip, wing, hood, final hand glaze, etc...

While this was going on, I was getting a handle on the brake caliper situation as well as the wheel saga. That piece of the puzzle is next…

Round 8 - The brake story

You’ve probably heard my friends post up how I’ve sent my brakes back and forth overseas umpteen times by now, so here’s how it all went down.

Some background information first…

To lend credibility to the WRC theme, I knew I wanted to choose a brake system that was actually used in the WRC. I also wanted a new set of wheels that conformed to the WRC tarmac spec size of 18x8. The Prodrive P1’s were 7.5 inches wide so they had to go (sadly).

Since most of the 18x8 professional rally wheels often lean towards the heavy side of the scale, I wanted calipers and rotors that were as light as possible, to offset that weight. I chose AP Racing 5200’s up front because they were the lightest 4-pot calipers I found that actually had dust seals, plus the brand has a rich history in the WRC. To top it off, the rotors that go with them only weighed .5 lbs over stock even though they are much bigger. It was important for me to have dust seals, because this is a street car that has to be capable in all conditions. I chose the 22B Subaru 2 pots out back due to their light weight, and excellent pad availability.

Ok, so here’s where OCD kicks in…

The official US distributor for AP Racing is Stillen/Brake Pros. Their kits came with Red calipers with Black logos. The rotors only came in crossdrilled/slotted. This was no good for me because I wanted slotted only. To top it off, the rotor hats are anodized Black. No good again. Why you ask? Because the Subaru 2-pot calipers are Red with White logo’s, and the DBA rotors I had for them have Grey hats. I wanted everything to match. The AP Racing “Formula” kits sold everywhere else in the world have Red calipers with White lettering, slotted only rotor option, and Grey anodized hats. Awesome, except they are not for sale in the US. You have to go through Stillen/Brake Pros. I ended up calling AP Racing in the UK and asked why the different color combos and slotted/crossdrilled only rotors for the US kits, and they told me they were actually made by Brake Pros but produced for AP in the US. No good. I wanted the genuine article. The stuff in the UK matched my rear set up perfectly, and I was determined to get them. I made a few calls overseas, and landed a set from a company who shall remain nameless.

When they finally arrived, the calipers did not match. Above the stiffening bar on one of the calipers, paint was missing. If it were like this on both calipers, I could have made due cause of symmetry and all, but since one was different, it drove me crazy. Have a look:

I sent them back to the UK and waited for another set. On the next set, the paint was there, but the logo’s did not match. One had the proper White lettering, and the other looked faded, almost Tan-like in color. I wasn’t having that. There was no third set to be had on the shelf. My contact actually called AP Racing and got their head quality control guy to hand pick the next perfect set to ship out. He did, and in turn, my contact sent them to me. They arrived in perfect condition.

So with that out of the way, it was on to the rear set - the Subaru 2 pots as found on the 22B. Got the first set in and the paint was pretty bad. Not even at all, some spots not even covered. Sent them back and got a second set. Same thing, only worse. Sent them back. The third set was the only set left practically in the country, so I had to take them. They were the best out of the other 2 pairs I had previously, but still had slight issues. The biggest issue though (on every set) was that they were more Pink than Red. They were way lighter than the AP calipers I just went through the trouble of getting.

After the third set came in looking faded as well, I got fed up I took them all apart and had them powder coated the same color as the AP’s so they’d match. Since the Subaru logo would be stripped off for powder coat, I took a picture of it with exact dimentions and sent it to Greg Lilly to have him make identical vinyl stencils for me.

I sent the calipers out to powder coat with specific instructions on what to coat and what not to coat (since I had very bad experiences before with a different coater).

They came out perfect. I put the logo’s back on, and I was in business. Everything matched, and I could sleep again, he he he.

I managed to steal the car from the body shop one weekend just to install the brakes…you can see all the inner platics are out (they'd be replaced with new), and the new undercoating was applied...

front before

front after

rear before

rear after

bleeding

completed

The wheel story is coming next, but while I was waiting for the unobtainium to arrive, I secured a new set of Speedline Turini’s direct from Speedline UK to fit over the new AP set up…

Stay tuned for the next round!
