Default OK, I'll break down and ask. (technical q)

What causes the tail pipe to say, "PSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH!" When I'm on the gas?
And the weird thing is, it doesn't always do it.

Plugged muffler? That would be my guess, but before I replace it, I thought I'd try to get a second opinion.
Thanks

Guys, just to clarify, Eric doesn't drive a turbo car (that I remember).

The BPV sound isn't what he's asking because it's when he's ON the gas.

Eric, sorry I can't answer your question definitively but my first guess was exhaust leak or plugged exhaust.

I would think that it is a leak as well.

if you have some sort of aftermarket intake then that might be the whistling noise

I don't think its an exhaust leak. If anything I would say it's the BOV/BPV suff open, or an intercooler pipe disconnected. Exhaust leaks don't make "PSSHHHHH" sounds on thottle. The only "PSHHH" sound I can think of would be boost leak. Which leads to intake side. Question really is, are you standing outside the car, while under load and on thottle? If so, that's impressive. You'll have to show me how you do that. If it "sounds" like it's exhausst, because your in the car under load and on thottle, then I would suggest boost leak.

Laughs at all the people, who don't read his car title, he doesn't have a turbo car.

Eric on my impreza's I got this sound, I had a leak in the midpipe flange and once i had a hole in the muffler.

Eric, Its just the muffler, the baffels inside it over time start to make that noise, I don't beleive it to be harming anything though. About 70% of cars is see make the noise. You can replace the muffler and it will go away. Mufflers from subaru are not the same as whats on the car, much crapier. I rec. an aftermarket muffler.

Laters,
Dan

Thanks Dan.
I kinda knew it wasn't hurting anything, power seemed fine, so does gas mileage. But like I said, it's embarrasing.
I called Shawn at Rallitek yesterday to ask, he said it had to be the muffler too. So I ran out to Aaron's Auto Wrecking and got a used one for cheap. It'll do for now.

Cheers everybody.

may be an exhaust leak, but if it were a leak wouldnt it be doing it all the time? On the other hand there could be somthing in your exhaust.. good luck
