Got my car back from the dealer today. I'd had two problems: the infamous downshifting to 1st issue, and a clunking/chugging engine noise.

They confirmed the transmission problem, removed it and disassembled it. They were unable to find anything wrong, but they decided to replace the 1/2 synchro anyway. Subaru recommended/required replacing the entire 1/2 gear set, which they did. Problem fixed.

They also confirmed the engine noise, which was most obvious whent he engine was cold and idling, but had recently occurred even while the engine was hot. It turned out to the cam belt tensioner, which was not working right. They replaced it.

occasionally she don't seem too happy about starting, and i've got the tranny issues. (goes in monday to have tranny fixed - under warranty) i have a few other things that i'm keeping an eye on to see if they become problems. i have to say though - i love this car.

i got a windy driver side window... wind noise that is. its weird...shut the door and drive off, the wind noise is there. I roll down the window a tad and roll it up, the noise is usually gone. it doens't leak water (even in those touchless autowash)... anyone know the remedy for this? im gonna get it looked at at the 3k oil change if I can't fix it myself.

i too have a hard time shifting into 1st when its cold. but after a few mintues driving, no problem. I do double clutch so that helps too.... blip in neutral while you come to a stop. i have a hard time getting it into reverse sometimes...but if im patient, I can get it in gear.

i dont have any rattles in mine....but who knows, its only got 400miles on it. but i kinda learned to live with noise.

So when does CR publish their findings on 2002 models i.e. WRX?

CR online does have the "2002 Impreza" listed. You need to be a member to look at the article though. Off to the library I go.

I have the article at my parent's house, but thats 220 miles away.

I do remember much of it though.

They tested a 5MT WRX vs 6MT RSX-S.

They liked the Subaru. Alot. Major complaint: GAS MILEAGE! Thats really it. Good seats, good steering, brakes, etc. The review was overwhelmingly good, except they didn't like the gas mileage.

They ranked it very high in their small sports cars or something category. And said reliability was expected to be above average.

I read that article too, several months ago. I was looking for something showing ACTUAL reliability not PREDICTED reliability; i.e. the results of polling thousands of WRX owners, after a full year of use, on frequency of repair, of specific components. Compared and ranked with other brands of course. Right now all we have are scattered reports of problems with the tranny, CEL, ABS etc, a poll of 320 votes or so, and a few people with brand new WRX's who exclaim about their problem free status. Not enough info to say much about WRX reliability one way or another.
