Default maximum wheel size without rubbing

what is the maximum i can go without any rubbing issues for 17s? car will be lowered slightly.

i'll most probably get 17x8, but what offset will safely accept most BBK without rubbing?

The wheel's ability to clear your brakes totally depends on its design...we can't give you a real answer unless you tell us what wheel you are going to run.

Also, it's your tire size that will determine if you rub or not, not the wheel. With 17s and a 53 to 48 or so offset 245/40-17s fit, sometimes without even having to roll your fenders.

lets say if i run Enkei RC T4s? i understand that wheel clears most BBK.

i'll be running 225/45/17s, on either 17x7.5 (+48) or 17x8 (+35 or +48)

Either of those wheels in 48 offset would be just fine. With a 48 offset you can easily run 235 width tires, or 245 with a tiny bit of fender rolling (although I didn't roll my fenders at all and ran 245s just fine, they did rub a littttle bit, during autocross events.

out of curiousity, what needs to be done to make 17 X 8.5 work, if anything. is this a common setup?

Nothing really. A 17x8.5 with 48 offset and 245 width is a near perfect setup for day to day driving IMO. A bit of fender rolling depending on your ride height and they'd fit great.
