Unhappy My car SUKS in the wind!

Man, we are having some gusts in cali right now, and my car is being thrown all over! I mean, its hard-to-control stuff, not just minor corrections! Its scaring me... nobody else on the road was having those problems, even the trucks...

Is it cause I dont have a sway bar, cause I have 14" rims with ****ty tires, or is it all that plus my soft suspension? ARG!

I think it's just the way the car is. Mine does it also. I've had it aligned twice and I just got new tires (Dunlop SP5000's), and it did it this morning. Not fun.

Hello

I dont know nothing, but I read somewher on this or edmunds subaru threads about a guy who was having wind handling problems with his impreza wagon, so a friend mechanic recomended geting the wheels realighned with 0 degree toe front and rear AND negative one degree of camber just in the front wheels. He claims it made all the difference in the world.

Good luck

Dude I have the same problem. Was driving up highway 5 the other day and it was swaying back and forth. I guess all this happens to semi light cars. But trust me it was kinda scary hehe

Swaybars and the Anti Lift Kit helped alot too!

There was a thread on alignment settings last week that might be helpful if you have an alignment place that will set it up for you. Also check with local autocross guys where they get it done. If you do it right it shouldn't affect tire life if you follow the regular rotation intervals

Talking windows help no kidding

I have a friend with an Isuzu Rodeo, he claims--and click and clack to--that lowering his upwind window a little and down wind window little more relieves some of the pressure differential that caused the sway in the first place.

According to my Isuzu driving buddy it makes a huge difference in gusts, the vehicle does not get rocked to the side as much and he can relax a litttle more---He's in a Rodeo after all.

I agree that stiffer suspension, stiffer sidewalls, lowering, and groudn effects would all help too.

I was thinking about the window thing, but It was raining hard at the time too

I think I might try the alignment thing... But not with this tire/suspension combo I have now I mean, 14" rims, and these narrow, lotta profile tires that wobble all over are probably the biggest problem of all... I just have no $ to fix it, and am waiting for X-mas to get that $

But, I dont want to lower the car, as It seems my car is already lower than an RS! If a set of WRX rims+tires raises the car a tad, then I might get some V5/6/P1 springs to put on the car to lower it a tad.

I'd like to see someones personal fix solution though, if anyone has done so!

I'll take your bump and raise it by one more.

Wheel alignment is important (as are good tires that don't squirm, I suppose), but also consider this...

Subarus are about as aerodynamic as flying buckets. Not very streamlined. They're pretty boxy, and all those hood scoops and flat noses don't help.

I used to drive a '94 Acura Integra, and it didn't sway in the breeze nearly as much as the Impreza does, regardless of the front-wheel-drive factor (which might not have anything to do with it, unless the conditions are severe).

Perhaps wind tunnel testing was done with the WRX turned sideways.

My car does it too... Sometimes I find myself looking for gust in trees when I'm getting batted about, and they aren't even moving!!! So I'd have to agree with you that these cars are unstable to say the least in the wind. And our 95's have none of the air scoops or spoilers that you guys have.

Honestly, this post makes me feel alot better, I thought I was the only one.
