Default Am i retarded? Can't get airbox cover back on

So some of you might have seen my other post about my poor gas mileage...
I went to take a look at the air filter to see if it was dirty.. .and now for the life of me.. i can't get the air box cover back on!

I don't know if its because it is a cheap filter, its definately not factory, and if i had to guess it is a FRAM air filter. But i can't seem to compress the rubber on the bottom part enough to get little tabs to go into the cutouts on the cover...

Is there some secret to this??
Maybe i just need to go pick up a factory air filter tomorrow from Subaru...

Hook the tabs first, slide the filter down and in to the "lid" and then close it up. My K&N doesn't fit perfect, but when it is clamped down the seal is good.

good luck
Jared

tilt the back part so that the bottom lip touches first then compress the thing to seal.

There are small latches on the bottom of the box that may be getting in the way.

So that's what i've been trying to do, but it seems impossible with the rubber piping that runs from the MAF to the resonator or whatever the big plastic box is.. I unbolted the MAF from the airbox cover just to make sure that was the reason, and i was able to hook the latches first and then use that to act like a hinge... but then of course you cant bolt the MAF back on then.. so i just did that to verify.

Now i'm trying to remove the rubber piping after the MAF but that thing is like melted on there or something...

Next time just unbolt the intake tube from the MAF tube so that the cover is seperate. Then you can finangle it more and then just reattach the intake tube again.
