Question APS-COBB Tuning Stage 1 & 2 Engine Packages and Warranties

Don't mean to be redundant, however, I haven't seen this specifically addressed.

Bought a WRX this week. The sales manager stated that if the APS-COBB Tuning Club Spec Stage 1 (280hp) or Stage 2 (320 hp) engine mods are installed by the dealer, the standard SOA warranty would NOT be affected. Also said that the APS-COBB parts would be covered under warranty by COBB.

Any experience, good, bad or otherwise would be greatly appreciated. Stage 1 kit is on the way from Texas.

Thanks,

Curtis

I know. I know.

But seriously, that's why I'm asking. BTW, Josh @ COBB told me the same thing.

Wait, I'll save you some typing-time. I know, he's selling the kits. As always, buyer beware.

Yeah right..."Sales Manager"

Primary Job...to sell you the car. After that it your problem.

I would ask for it in writing, but read the warranty first.

Smile Warranty in Writing

Met with the SM today. The good folks at COBB (per the Sales Manager) provide a 1 year / 12k mile warranty, in writing, on all parts (plus labor) installed in their engine packages, provided that they are installed by an authorized installer, IE: my soobie dealer. The SOA warranty is unaffected. We shall see.

Consider the beauty of this deal. The dealer installs the mods, (granted, at a price) therefore, none of that hide-the-mod BS when the day comes that you take your rex in for service.

C

Standard billable hours per COBB: Stage 1 = 8
Stage 2 = 16

Serious question here, I don't fully understand:
So, if a Subaru dealer installed Stage 2 kit and you were to strip the teeth off second gear and fry the clutch within 3k miles, are you saying that SOA will warranty it because it was installed by a Subaru dealer?

I went to SEMA's website and from what I gathered that it is up to SOA to decide about your warranty not the dealer. I wouldn't trust that, even if the dealer says it leaves the warranty safe. If SOA caught wind of that, and you had a engine or tranny failure they could link to a engine mod, and goodbye claim.

Also the subaru dealer I am currently dealing with WILL not install any parts that are not subaru parts. Well except the sti parts, they don't install those either.

It depends on the dealer. My dealer is mod-friendly. However, in order to make sure that the Mod's are correctly done, the dealer wants to install everything, and any mod you do has to be street legal.

Even if I can get my dealer to install aftermarket equipment, if any warrentee issues come up, extra consideration is taken to determine if the mods are involved, and you have to be prepared for warrentee coverage to be denied.

[edit]

My dealer is an autherized Cobb Tuning installer, so the minute the Stage1 kit is available (i.e CARB approved) it's on my WRX.

listen 99% of the time it is the dealer that decides to warranty or not, the only time soa gets involved is if the customer is not happy.
if your dealer is cool and/or likes you they can/will be able to justify anything they warranty. I have been dealing with this **** for years with motorcycles

That's really weird... are yous saying that as long as the mods are CARB approved, that a dealer will willingly remove cats etc...?

Here in Nebraska, no dealer will touch the emissions system, I.E. removing cats to put a turbo back exhaust..... thus eliminating 2 cats.... apparently there is a $25,000 fine or something....

Who knows, maybe it depends on if a dealer "feels like doing it"

I really doubt that a dealer is able to say if they will warranty that stuff or not.... , SOA ultimately makes that decision. (although, I'm sure a dealer can always "fix it" so that it looks like it should be covered under regular warranty)

Eventually, if dealers are always trying to fix stuff under warranty, i.e. bent rods, cracked heads, blown turbos, broken gears, screwed diffs, etc.... SOA will catch on and start investigating the claims, and then start trying to deny regular warranty repair, for un-modded WRX's

I basically look at it this way.... if you have the money to mod your WRX, then you should put the money aside to pay for it when it breaks as well......just in case it's the mod's fault.....and SOA ultimately denies warranty repair....

This is just plain BS. Read your warranty booklet.

If by some chance the engine or tranny grenades, SOA won't pay as the engine is modded (unless the dealer lies to them - I wouldn't want to rely on that). You can bet the dealer won't pay for it out of their own pockets.

Does Cobb's warranty cover their components or the entire drivetrain?

If it only covers their components (which it sounds like), ask yourself this question:

Do I have $3-4k cash in the bank to pay for a new engine if I blow this one up?

The dealer will not remove the cats. For example, if you have replace your exhaust with a system that has no cats and you grenade your tranny, the dealer will not work on the car because they will not be able to touch the exhaust system to get to the tranny. If, however, the exhaust has cats installed, they are willing to remove the exhaust to get to the tranny.

I think the Cobb tuning parts installed are only warrenteed for the part, not the rest of the car. It's up to the dealer to decide what's covered and what's not. And, no I do not have 3-4k for a new engine if I blow it up...
