Default What does a sticky timing belt idler sound like?

So I've got this squeeling noise coming from my engine bay, but the confusing part is that it sounds like it's coming from the rear of the motor.

If one of my idlers or the tensioner were sticky what would it sound like? Do they ever get sort of sticky, or do they always just seize completely?

Yes they get sticky, i just had this problem, and it only made noise for the first few seconds it was started.... but it was an un-mistakeable noise, more of a metallic squeeling than a rubber belt squeeling...

Does it happen all the time, or at start up?

hmm... It's possible that I'm not able to distinguish metal squeeling from rubber squeeling as well as you. Did you get a chance to poke your head under the hood to listen for where it was coming from? Was it obviously coming from the front of the motor?

The noise starts once the motor is warm. I'm not driving the car right now, but when I started it up on tuesday I had to drive for around 5 minutes to get it to start. Before that the car had been sitting for a week.

Probably next tuesday I'm going to get the motor warm so it makes the noise then take the accessory and AC belts off to see if I can get a better listen. I've never tried the screwdriver stethoscope but I'm going to give it a shot as well.
