Default Focus RS is back - and meaner than ever (Europe)

Focus RS is back - and meaner than ever (Europe)

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...llCars/224098/

Quote:
Ford is working on a top-secret new Focus RS, and is likely to choose next year’s London motor show for the car’s grand unveiling.

Buoyed by storming market demand for the Focus ST — which in its first year sold twice as well as its deadly rival, the VW Golf GTi in the UK — Ford believes it has created market space for a faster, edgier, 30 per cent more powerful Focus whose near-supercar performance and rally-car looks can both take advantage of last year’s win in the World Rally Championship and recall the heady days of the Escort RS Cosworth.

The new car, powered by a 280bhp turbocharged version of Ford’s five-cylinder engine, retains two-wheel drive but will use a special semi-active limited-slip diff to improve traction and on-limit handling. It has standard 19-inch wheels, special springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, and rides a little lower than the already-lowered Focus ST, which keeps its status as Ford’s bigger-selling, more versatile sporty saloon. Like the ST, the RS uses a six-speed stick-shift transmission. Total production is forecast at between 5000 and 10,000 units before the next Focus arrives.

Ford’s performance cars boss, Jost Capito, won’t confirm the car’s existence, on the grounds that it’s not yet in the company’s official plan, though he refuses to condemn the concept. “We are always pushing for cars like this,” he said, “but it is difficult because we have limited funds to spend on sporty cars. However, we would obviously like to build cars like this one.”

Designers want to avoid over-decorating the new RS, but the car is nevertheless believed to have a deeper front bumper with rally-style brake and turbo air scoops, plus a rear roof spoiler design influenced by the WRC cars. Flared wheel arches won’t be on the agenda as they were in the previous Focus RS; they’re deemed too expensive for such a low-volume model. Instead, the RS will use distinctive interior materials and badges to emphasise its special status.

It is perhaps a surprise that the new RS retains front-wheel drive when Ford has access to various Volvo and Land Rover 4x4 systems that might have been adapted. But retaining two-wheel drive saves money: Ford plans to have the RS on the market at the impressively low price of £21,000 to £23,000, only about £3500 ahead of the ST entry price. The project is believed to need around 18 months to complete, so production cars should be ready by June 2009

Giggity. I like the WRC style hood scoops. The top one is a photoshop though, as the wing doesn't show up looking through the rear glass.

That car would be soo hot if it was 4wd. 280bhp is a little much going to the front wheels...

I wonder if that semi active front diff is like the one used in the Mazdaspeed3?

Someone needs to find the dealership Ford CEO Mulally is working in and tell him you're looking for a 3 door hatch with about 280 hp... and if there is a Focus model that has those specs.

don't forget that the upcoming Caliber SRT-4 has 300hp, and is FWD.

Once again everyone will chime in saying bring it to the states but no one will think about the practicality of it. This thing is not going to be as cheap as the Neon SRT-4. So this is going to be a 280 HP FWD Focus for about 25 to 30 grand.

In all honesty, how many of us here on NASIOC, who scream at for to bring it here, will go out and buy this car?

I know I would not.

:raises hand:
And why not? I already own a WRX - sure it is lots less power than this thing, but isn't that far from it's price... Also, no one is assuming that this will be a big volume car - but it is a halo car for the Focus line. It is because enthusiasts lust after the high-end versions that the general public buys the lower-end ones. The fact that it would be FWD is really the ONLY thing about that car that isn't practical. I am sure that it still is quite fuel efficient (relatively speaking), and it is a hatch, do it has tons of room. And at least the Euro-Focus seems to be quite well built, and if under $30k, the price isn't bad at all. I don't see a problem.

People are lining up to buy that car with a Volvo badge at that price, with a mere 210hp. The C30, that is.

Yes, but keep in mind that the American general public is pretty idiotic when it comes to cars. That's why we have so many of the same cars under different brands and model names. In all honesty you look at the people here is southern California and you will have people saying I will never buy a Ford but get in line to get a Volvo.

Same thing with the whole I drive an Acura/Infiniti/Lexus not a Honda/Nissan/Toyota arguments.

Because the average driver is more demanding of quality small cars there.

You dont just convert pounds to dollars to get the equivalent price. An RX8 costs 28ish here and 22ish there, that is not double. There are other factors that go into it.

Yeah. I was more interested when it was still rumored to be AWD. while 280HP & FWD isn't bad per say, I don't want it.
