Default 17" or 18" set up? Need guidance.

Hello, i have a 02 WRX and am currently riding on Motegi FF6's in a custom painted Banga Gloss Black. The ride is smooth and everything is fine and dandy but i have had them for 4 years and need a change. Shall I go bigger with a 18" setup. I like the motegi RT-5's but will a bigger wheel hurt my ride comfort and or affect my speed or anything? Also since i have a 02 WRX i shall be looking for a wheel with a 5X100 bold pattern with a 45+ offset correct? One more thing is 21 lbs for a 18" wheel Heavy? Thanks, could use some advice.

All I know is, bigger the rim size, the heavier it is and I don't really see the point of going bigger than you need to. Someone would have to tell me if there is really any advantage to going to an 18" wheel on your car other than looks, there didn't appear to be any reason for it for me.

I have a set of 17x8.5 SSR's ('05 STI) and 255/40R17's sit on them quite superbly with only an occasional bit of rubbing on rough road, but never on the track. I also have a Cobb Stage 2 suspension package. 245's have even better clearance. I know 05 STI's had wider wheel wells so you might have to roll your fenders if you go wide.

I don't know what would fit on your car but I personally would do eveyrthing possible to avoid heavier rims.

Here's the deal...you aren't going to gain anything performance wise with 18s, so if that's your reasoning, throw that plan out. You will probably have a bit harsher ride as well, because of the lower profile tires you'd be running. BUT, if you are just looking for a new look and have found some 18s you like, and absolute performance isn't the number one thing you are looking for, than go for it.

oh yea, and 18" tires cost a good bit more so for me who torches a set of tires a year, 17s are the ticket.

Good god, 21 pounds is awful, unless you're just trying to screw up your performance... I also have SSR Competititons, and in 17x8, they weigh about 15 pounds- 24 pounds of rotating weight loss. The 18s will also mean you have to run either larger, or lower profile, tires. So you'll either have yet more weight gain, and a taller final drive, or almost no sidewall to absorb small bumps. Plus, my 17s look just fine to me...
