Default Routine Maintenance

So I did some searches but I still have a few questions. The car has just under 18k miles on it and this is going to be the first time we service it ourselves. I was just going to change the oil, oil filter, rotate tires and balance them, and check fluids. Now when they say "oil, filter, lube". What do they mean by lube? And how should I balance the tires (same air pressure?)? Anything else I should do? Sorry if they're total noob questions. Thanks.

Oil/filter/LUBE is just a generic name. Our Subaru's don't get the 'lube' part, as the undercarriage is all sealed up, with no zerks to grease. Lubing goes with the name because older vehicle needed bushing, seals, etc.. lubed everytime you changed the oil, much like heavy equipment, dirtbikes, fourwheelers, etc..

If you are on stock tires, you want to use the stock recommended pressures, or depending on where you live you can add or subtract a tiny bit. Some places like Wal-Mart will only fill your tires to stock tire sticker pressure, even if they aren't stock tires, so watch out. I'd research what the best pressure for your particular tires is, and then ask them to inflate it to that point. If you have cold weather, it's ok to put a tad bit more in, because the cold reduces tire pressure, just don't put more than +2 or +4 lbs. in more, and make sure to have it balanced out as our AWD systems like everything "fueng shei"

As far as balancing tires, I'd say go to a shop that has good equipment and can balance using the inner tire stick on weights. Our alloys come with them on the inside, might as well keep it that way. It doesn't(shouldn't) cost extra, just some mechanics don't like doing it because it requires more precision and is more difficult to re adjust.

Hope that helps a bit, I used to work at a TLE, so I'm just going from experience. I don't know it all, so other more knowledgeable people may chime in later

assuming you are on OEM wheels/tires, they should already be balanced. do a search for "wheel balancing" for more info. you will want to check your tire pressure periodically, however.

if this is your first time doing any maintenance, check the maintenance schedule that came with the car and make sure you stick to that at a minimum. be sure to search here and at scoobymods.com - this should give you all the info you need.

I lub the rear door hinges, hood hinges and hood locking mechanism with white grease. No need to rebalance tires unless you are having problems. JMO Ed

What about cleaning the air filter? I have an APS cai and we live on a dusty road. Should I clean that too? If so, how? Thanks
