Thumbs up Amsoil good, Air Filter suggestions?

Well, I recently started hearing a pinging sound in the engine, and was not to pleased. It sounded like valve problems, almost as if they were being starved of oil. It's been noticeably worst during the last few single digit temperature mornings, accompanied with some other unpleasant issues.

Changed it this afternoon to Amsoil 5w30, and the engine is MUCH quieter. The valve noise is down to a 'normal' level for Subarus, and I feel like they aren't being starved anymore . I'm never putting that Mobile 1 in again. Was the first time I tried it, and last time too.

Also, I changed the air filter, but I was wondering if you guys had a better suggestion for an air filter other than stock? I know K&N has the filtercharger, but I've heard mixed reviews, and some say that it strains out less dirt then stockers. Any better than stock filters?

Thanks for any help in pointing me in the right direction, maybe even a write-up article link or something.

~Levi

I've been using K&N drop on filters for about 5 years now on a few different cars (Neon, Dodge Dakota, WRX) and like them a lot. I noticed a big difference in the Pickup when dropping a K&N. Made a difference in the Neon too. To give an idea, it basically gave back about the same horse power the A/C takes away when it's running. It is true that they do let through a very small amount of fine particles though but that's the trade-off for better performance... takes years for it to build up though and isn't anything some throttle body cleaner can't handle.

If the K&N's are oiled too much, the oil gets on sensors and can gum things up. If they're not oiled enough, they don't filter properly. If you follow the directions on the re-charge kit, it's easy to get right.

Search for and read the Intake FAQ....at the bottom is a buttload of filter info. Once you've read it all, tell us how that new paper filter is working out for ya!

Well, reading the tests, it seems the paper filter is the best for living on dirt roads and driveways, as I do.

I need to find a cheaper paper filter for our cars though, they've got to have some cheaper than 16$.
