Default Gary From Compass Emailed me today...

And he said that the intake is about done......he said he needs four "brave souls" to prepay $275 for the intake and be willing to have it shipped within a month of paying.

$400!!!!! Is that the actual price of this intake, or is that for the first ones and then they give you money back? I thought just shy of $300 was pretty extreme for the Cobb. I know the dyno charts are very impressive, but WOW!

Garrett - do you go to the Hot Shots meetings? If you get that thing installed, I'd make the 2-hour trip up to B-more to see it (and play some pool )

Wow, 400. I really hope that is not the price for this intake! I was really considering buying one when the price was at ~275. But 400 is rediculous.

any word on when he'll have the CAI available for my '98 obs?

I would gladly pay $275 in advance if he needs the cash to get the project done!

Hey everyone...
Whew am I worn out! I need your help...
We have reached an agreement with a reputable company that builds rally parts. The catch is I have to buy the prototype and several units to get the ball rolling. The prototype alone is $400, so I am looking for 5 brave individuals to prepay for their systems so that we can make this happen. The only changes we have made to the final unit are mostly cosmetic, and for cost savings. In actuallity the box will be stronger, more attractive, and not as expensive as it was proving to be in the other form... The only change that you will really see is the top of the plenum box will be riveted and bonded to the main body instead of welded, and the pipe leading to the filter will have a silicone elbow attaching it to the plenum box. The rivets and silicone will both be blue.
Options will be available of course(at additional cost). The rivets and silicone can be had in different colors for an additional $10. The option of carbon fiber components can chosen, pricing will depend on type of carbon material, and amount of carbon fiber desired in system.
I truly am sorry for all the delays, and really do appreciate your patience in these matters. The growing pains of being a small company are really tough, but are worth it to me, so that I can bring you the best components I can... THANK YOU!!!

what is the final price on the units (being you said you did more cost effective stuff)?

if you pre-order the unit now, when will you get it?
after the initial units (pre-orders) are out, how long until you officially produce these?
thanks
tom

Gary - glad to finally see this great intake go into production... however, you're just producing non-MAF models right now, correct?

Are you planning on a '98 MAF version? Soon? Need a pre-orderer, because I would gladly preorder if that's what you need to hurry up the process I can't wait any longer!

Thanks,
Dan

Thumbs up Almost there!!!

Ok I talked to my builder today and the prototype is officially ordered, with 10 boxes to follow. I will know more early next week on lead times for completed boxes. I will be able to let you know more then. We will have the prototype built and test fitted before any more are built, you will get to see some pictures of that. We are working on a design for the pre-00' cars too. We should have something finished close to the release of the 00'+ cars. I will let those of you who are first in line, and those of you who are willing to prepay know when we will be ready to accept payments. Thank you all very much!!!
We are going to be restricting the carbon fiber to the cold air box that lives at the fender and houses the air filter. In the future we might delve into a full carbon fiber system, but lets get the first units out there! I want you guys to be as amazed as I am...

So what's the total cost and what comes with it? I'm glad to see this finally come to term in such a short (relatively) time.

uh oh...

So the latest from Gary is that the first round should be in people's hands before christmas, which is good news.

However, he's also going to be making around the same time CAIs for MAF (pre-'00) subies. My question - only for 2.5L ones? my 98obs is 2.2L obviously... is that a problem? the web page says:

"Compass Cold Air Intake for Pre-00' 2.5L Subarus'(Impreza, Legacy, Forester) Available TBA price subject to change"

Just curious if 2.2L is a problem. any guesses anybody?

God I can't wait, there's so much that I'm not buying to hold off for this! (read as: more ramen, less arby's)

thanks,
Dan

Hey all,
I was looking at a 93' Impreza the other day with a 1.8L in it and from what I saw the intake will fit with a little modification to the car itself. Nothing major, just moving some sensors and stuff. The system should work for most Impreza's, post 93' Legacys, and Forester's. A few test fittings will need to be tried to make sure! I will let all of you know as soon as I have something concrete for a timeline and power numbers when they are available... Thank you all for the patience and understanding!!! (and Shorty Ramen is good for you...)

Your intake is ready to ship, we'll need $xxx from you.

...

I should be getting the 3rd production intake.. but where is it?

Also.. can really really cold air, i'm talking about -20 hurt the car?

i think that cold of air would be like dumping water on a hot engine, if there was such a drastic change, it may do bad stuff, like crack something.

As long as you haven't bypassed the throttle body heater line (the coolant line that goes through the throttle body, what ever it is called) your car will be fine in the cold. It keeps your throttle from freezing. The air entering the engine won't be -20 by the time it gets into the cylinders.

Rodding around before it is fully warmed up will be alot more hurtful than just extreamly cold air.

Trogan9x-

Not quite. The engine is already in the cold. It is the internal heat that is building up for the temperature change. Everything starts at the same temperature (relativly in some cases, depending how fast the weather changed or how long the vehicle has been sitting blah blah blah) so you are not going to be "splashing cold water" on the engine, since the engine has been imersed in the temp since before start up.

Wink Be patient...

Not yet guys! Rest assured I will let you know as soon as I have it. But we can only go so fast. My contact was called out of town, so the prototype may be done and I just don't yet. We will see!
