Thumbs up **FOR SALE** 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel (45 - 50mpg)

I bought the little bunny from central Ohio about 2 years ago with 130,xxx on the clock. Since then I have put about 20,000 miles on it. About 90% of those were on the hiway, back and forth from Beaufort, SC to Charlotte, NC and Greensboro, NC to see my girlfriend and family... Since I moved to Raleigh though and started going to school here at NCSU, I really haven't needed two cars at all... Infact, I don't even need a car at the moment. I take the bus EVERYWHERE and it is free because I am a State student. But there is no chance in hell that I'll sell the Subaru. It's my baby. Anyway, back to the Rabbit. It has a 1.6ltr Diesel engine (~50bhp and ~76lb/ft of torque), the nearly bulletproof engine that VW diesels got their fame from. Before I bought this Rabbit (which is my second one I might add) I checked on the internet about the reliability of them and discovered a guy in Canada that had done over 400k miles without a major rebuild!!! The body of mine has roughly 151,300 miles and the engine (which was replaced by the prevuous owner) now has roughly 90,xxx miles on it. It will consistantly get 40+mpg in the city and up around 50mpg on the hiway if you drive at 60mph. So here is a rough rundown on the rabbit... The Good and the not so good...

The Good
- All of the following parts are NEW
rear brake pads, drums, brake cylinders and parking brake cable, and wheel bearings.
- Diesel Injection pump
- Timing belt
- Water pump
- Hood release cable
- Front wheel bearings
- Exhaust downpipe and downpipe "toilet bowl" gasket
- Oil pressure sensor
- Shifter bushings

*It also has an engine block heater* (Which I can't use at my apartment complex because I am on the 3rd floor ... But it is definitly a good thing to have when the weather is this cold outside...

I am also including everything that I own that has to do with VW. I have a timing belt tensioner tool. A Haynes manual. A 6mm Hex socket (used to remove the water pump pully). A torque wrench which I used on my first VW rabbit when I changed the head gasket (that one had 315,xxx miles on it when it blew the HG)... A bike rack (it won't fit my SVX, and besides, I hope to get the japanese roof rack for it in a few months after I get on the NC State cycling team )

The "not so good"
- The brake lights aren't working for some reason. (really don't have enough money to throw at it at the moment, also am really lacking time to put into it too. I do have a mechanic who is really great, but like I said, no money to give him at the moment.). If I had to guess I'd say that it was the brake light switch that is bad.
- The clutch is approaching the end of it's life, but does not slip. Probably will last another year or two if driven gently (what other way can you drive a 50hp Diesel VW )
- Doesn't have an NC State inspection at the moment. Again because I haven't had the money to get the brake lights checked out.

As I said in a few other posts, I'd like to get $1,500 for it. However since I would like to get rid of it and I understand that two main things need to be taken care of on the car (brake lights and NC State inspection). Because of this I will take the closest offer. Or I will go get it fixed and then just tack on 75% of the bill to the sale price. I'd love for you to come see it and have a drive if you like. Just give me a call if you would like to come check it out ... I would damn near promise that you won't find a cheaper daily driver that gets 50mpg and has the potential to last at least a good 200,000 miles more

SVXAutoXerMoFo (AIM)

Hope to hear from someone soon... It isn't doing me anygood having two cars and trying to support them both on a college student's income

NEW PRICE: SOLD......

Doesn't mean you can't go up there and drive it back.

If youguys in florida are interested I wouldn't mind driving it down to you for a small $100 "fee" (to cover a plane ticket back to Raleigh)... Hell, for that matter if any member is interested and is within about 800 miles, I wouldn't mind driving the car to them... I love road trips and love plane rides even more ... So help me out with a plane ticket home and I'll deliver it personally ... That should say alittle something about how confident I am that you could drive this little thing almost anywhere

Valentines day bump... I am willing to entertain any reasonable offer for someone that needs transportation more than I do at the moment... Also, as I said, I don't mind driving it to you personally for an extra $50 per 400 miles from Raleigh... Throw some offers at me so I don't have to take the time to list this little bunny in the local auto trader and craigslist.com.....

Alright, anyone that wants to see the little Rabbit, I'll have it at the Sandblast Rally this weekend... Driving down Saturday morning really early.... From there I am driving to Wilmington (probably) and from there, back to Raleigh...

Give me a call if you want to check it out this weekend...

I'd buy that beast if I didn't already have an extra beater vehicle. Anyway, good luck with the sale!

If I actually had somewhere to put this I would be all over it. Guess apartment living plus upcoming wedding = more miles for the WRX.

Alright, well back from the Sandblast Rally.... The little bunny ran awesome all the way down and back... It was so cold down there that I just left it idling pretty much all day (atleast 8 of the 11 hours I was out there in the cold)... Figured that since it was so cold, it would be alot better to sit in the heat of the car... Here is the amazing part though... The Fuel gauge never moved!!! All those hours of idling and it never moved!!! I got back to Raleigh lastnight with about 3xx miles on the trip meter and the fuel gauge was sitting where it normally does... I was shocked out of my mind...

Any more interests??

Quite true... There is some personallity about them that makes ya love them... They don't look good, they are slow as hell, not really that great to drive either... But there's just something about them that makes ya like them and that is cool ... I know I don't look cool while driving it, but at the same time I don't care because it is so cheap to run and actually every other Rabbit I have seen on the road so far up here (and I've only seen a few) looked waaay worse off than mine and that made me feel better ...

But still, just can't beat driving the SVX around campus. I've met somany people who ask me what it is. Because of that, there is no way I'm selling the SVX... ever

On Sunday, I'm listing it on Craigslist... I really need to sell it soon so if you are interested, make me an offer... My apartment complex keeps threatening to have it towed because I am taking up two spots. Each person here is only allowed to have one car (tight parking)... I really can't afford to recover it from a towing company at the moment so it needs to be sold ASAP...
