Question Heater making flapping noises...

Hey guys. Seems this could be a good place to post a question like this.... If not, whatever Mod locks it, please drop me a line.

Anyway, my heater has started making odd noises. Basically sounds like a leaf stuck in a fan blade. (Which, I suppose, could be it....?) I've poked my head around, and noticed that the noise I think is coming from under the dash on the right, or at least it's very prominent there.

I had service at Subaru for an oil change yesterday, but they quoted $70 just to "assess the problem; to take out the heater motor and part of the dash." Figured I'd check here to see if there's some easier (and certainly cheaper) way.

Thanks.

It probably IS a leaf in the heater fan. But why doesn't Subaru cover this problem under warranty?? Unless you have 36K miles, in which case I'd suggest that you might well let it be for a week or two and see if the leaf breaks up and blows through.

Yeah I'm over 36k. About 41k, actually. But I have the 100k "Gold" warrantee... I wonder if this kind of problem is covered under that....

Well it's been about a month now and it hasn't blown through (if it is a leaf). I've cranked it all the way up, still nothing. Can't hear it much through the radio, but otherwise it's kind of annoying.

I second that. It's almost certainly a leaf in your HVAC system. I've had luck gingerly poking a wire coat hanger into the vent.

It could be just a noisy blower fan. Please check out this link and this link for more details and for instructions on how to fix it.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out shortly.

As for it just being noisy, well I'd accept that, if it weren't that I've owned this car for a while now, and I know what it should sound like....

Thumbs up PROBLEM FIXED!

Thanks Richard L. for the links. The first one didn't do much but help to point to the second one.

Three screws, and out pops the heater fan. I just did it 10 minutes ago. Sure enough, one dry leaf and a pine needle.
