Default Ford offers first rebates on new Edge crossover

Ford offers first rebates on new Edge crossover

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll...TO01/702150362

Quote:
DEARBORN -- Ford Motor Co. already is offering its first cash incentives on the new Ford Edge crossover, but the automaker says the move is a testament to the new vehicle's success.

Earlier this week, the company began offering $500 in dealer cash on the low-end SE model with 17-inch rims, but not on models with 18-inch rims or higher trim lines. Ford spokesman Jim Cain said the move was driven by higher-than-expected demand for more expensive models. He said 80 percent of Edge buyers are opting for the SEL or SEL Plus, leaving some dealers with too many of the entry-level versions.

"We've got a little bit of a stock imbalance, and we're taking care of it with this," Cain said, adding that production is also being adjusted to match market demand for the better-equipped models.

Automakers usually add incentives when they are having a hard time selling a particular model, but analysts say this is not always a negative.

"Five hundred dollars isn't much money," said Erich Merkle, director of forecasting at IRN Inc. Grand Rapids. "That could be good news. That should actually help if there's more demand for the higher end models. You want to sell the one that has the higher sticker price."

Rival General Motors Corp. also is offering incentives on new vehicles -- the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups -- a move it says is part of its normal launch strategy.

This is fancy talk for... people are only buying the ones that are even worth cross shopping(what Ford call high end). Everyone seems much less eager to drive (much less finance) a rental fleet twin.

That is funny.

I've actually seen quite a few of them on the road. They are good vehicles, IMO, for people who do not put much emphasis on sporty driving dynamics.

I think it's Ford-inese for "We're renaming it into the Ford Taurus Z next year."

Hmmm....maybe they should rename it the Pinto or the Escape II. The Mercury version could be the Capri. Jeebus.
